Merit Awards for 2013 and much more ....

-
Here are details of the Christmas club run ...
" Hello fellow runners

Our social summer runs are gathering momentum.  Apparently thoughts of coffee and carrot cake entice people out of bed on a Saturday morning.  Twelve hardy souls turned up to hear Andrew Reese-Jones promise us five x 1k intervals at Burnside Park.  Everyone ran at their own pace and we regrouped before attempting the next one.  Actually it was probably more social than a spread out pack run.  Certainly more challenging than anyone was expecting.

A thirteenth club member joined in later, and it was a chatty group back at the club rooms, setting the world of running to right.   Thanks, Andrew.

Next up is Saturday 21st December leaving at 8.30am from John Gamblin's house,
25 Amoka Crescent
.  Coffee and Christmas cake will be supplied.    Again we will be running a 1k loop.  Those who wish to make it a speed session can, and those who wish to take a more leisurely pace will not be criticised at all.  Some sort of Christmas decoration / attire should adorn your club singlet  !!

                                     - scene from movie "Bad Santa " for ideas - ed

Remember Sunday runs leave the Sign of the Takahe at 8am for about 90mins of hills.  Craig leaves Bottle Lake carpark at 8:30am with a number of groups ranging from speedy boys to walking.

Until then.

Robyn "

If you require your new Athletics NZ Username and Password (all financial members have one ) get in touch with me (Mike ) and I'll fish yours out of the new IMG database for you .These allow you to enter various national races and claim early-bird discounts but they are fiendishly difficult to remember .Luckily you can log in to IMG and replace them with your own preferred ones eg

Us09IiMaj   and Dx3kOOmeQ

Just a reminder of which club runs are being held over the Summer season.

1-     Wednesday evenings at Harewood Tav clocktower at 5.45 pm -not sure if Rodger and Robyn are still doing this .
2-    Sunday morning hill run from Takahe at 8 am - still available but numbers can vary .
3-    Sunday 8 am at Burwood Forest HQ-   I haven't attended this myself for a while (greatly missing seeing John ,Victor and Denis ) so not sure if anyone still does it.

4-Monthly hosted run : These will be notified by email
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not many results are filtering in . Denis said he might be running a 21 km leg of the Molesworth Challenge but if he did it was as part of a team without his name in it .
Robyn ran in the little known Selwyn Half Marathon where she was second woman overall to Fiona Gilroy and 13 th place overall .Not sure what the terrain was like,  but she ran 1.36 - only five minutes off Gilroy's time.  The winning mens time was 1.13 (K.Faass )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The club held a lively and well -attended Half AGM on Tuesday 26 November .The singlet motion was passed by unanimous vote and FOUR merit awards were conferred ...
Margot , Anna and Courtney attended the meeting - Margot and Courtney to receive their awards and  Anna to collect two certificates dating back to 2009  .

Margot had a full season in her final year as a Junior . She won the club ,  South Island , Canterbury and New Zealand Junior Womens Cross Country titles .She also took the JW Canterbury Road title and a silver Team medal at National Road relay - all on a background of a busy year at 'varsity.

Courtney's achievements in the arcane discipline of race walking was similarly impressive .She won the  Canterbury and New Zealand Junior Womens Road titles . She broke a Canterbury 3000m W U20 record and qualified for the Australian Champs (?) by walking 20 km in 1.53.58  and 10 km in ......
(The record is unratified at present and the previous mark was 14 min 21 set in Nov 2007 )

Sean Eustace and Cameron Avery couldn't be at the meeting to receive their awards .They capped impressive seasons on road , track and trail by qualifying for the NZ team to the Australian U18 Cross Country Champs (which were deemed to be of international standing ) .Sean achieved 5th place ( 2nd NZ'er  ) while Cameron was 20 th .Together they were counting runners in the winning team (but Australia wouldn't award the gold medal to non-residents ) .

Veterans Richard Seigne and Andrew Reese -Jones were also considered for merit . Richard came so close with his 2nd placing at NZ Road Champs and Andrew's CHCH marathon didn't quite meet the criteria .The criteria in the Constitution are set  high to prevent the merit board becoming overpopulated  (which calls up the old chestnut about  english club Gateshead being so studded with good runners that Charlie Spedding had trouble getting into their A team ...this story is included for the enthrallment of our UK members who will appreciate it  - esp D.H  : )
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With a full eighteen financial members at the meeting we took the opportunity to vote on the motion to standardise our singlets to the horizontal orange stripe model .The motion was passed unanimously and the Constitution amended re clause 4 (c) .

                                                      - Official strip for the entire club -

Of course no-one can be prevented from wearing old style club singlets (Denis and Greg have items dating well back into the previous century ) and even Courtney was wearing the vertical singlet when she did her recent 20 km (see header )  . She was approached at the meeting with an offer of a  new singlet as part of recognition of her efforts this year .

Two reports are usually delivered at Half AGMs : the Senior and the Junior Winter Club Captains' .
Rodger normally confines his address to a few lines , but this year he was more prolix and gave us a very entertaining summary along with special costume effects .Underlying it all was a year of good progress for the club . Here is the full text :

"Christchurch Avon Athletic Club Winter Club Captains Report 2013-11-24
It is my pleasure to provide the report on the Senior winter running associated activity.
The season commenced in dramatic fashion with the club winning the Senior Hagley relay for the first time in a significant number of years albeit with no seniors in the team! To help mark this special occurrence a very successful evening out was held at Winnie Bagoes at Ferrymead. It has been a while since our last mass evening out and it is intended to do this on a more regular basis. Thanks to Robyn for her organisation of this event and help with most of the other club captains' tasks.
After this monumental achievement one could be excused for thinking the only way is downhill, but not so. Listen or read on.
New club singlets were supplied to try and make the senior members look like junior members.  Next year we will be working on botox and the odd plastic surgery. We will not however be resorting to sex change operations to improve our performance.
The standardisation and newing up of the singlets has created a real ‘stand out’ and ‘look at us’ feature on the local, regional, national and even international stage.
The ‘ look at us ‘ included numerous National medals over the country , on the road and again winning the club of the year competition.
New pre or aprez running, blue or orange long sleeve tops were introduced to help with the branding of the club and I believe they have been very successful in doing that. Some have gone the extra mile and added shoes, laces, shorts and a short sleeve tee to their arsenal (here Rodger divests his kit-ed  )
To assist with the cohesion of the club  the Sunday run from the Takahe was delayed til 8:30 to fit in with the junior group and it is pleasing to see a quite a few runners gradually increasing their fitness and tagging onto a group they couldn’t before or going just that bit extra each time. I must admit it is very motivating to witness the bunch of ‘white Kenyans ‘ gambolling off into the distance each week knowing that you are watching something quite special.
Regular Wednesday evening runs starting at 5:45 were held starting from and ending at the Harewood Tavern. These runs involve a quiet warm up run to Nunweek Park quite a few drills and strides followed by a quiet run back. Deficiencies or perfections of form were heartily debated during a period of rehydration. Next season it is intended to have a coach on hand to assist with this often neglected part of a runners diet-  that is drills not drinking.
Also quite effective has been a Monday evening easy run from Burnside High. While the youngsters have been have been doing their thing many caregivers have been pushing the boundaries as an organised group."

The other report was from Craig who outlined the season of the Junior club . This is a worthwhile read, but as this blog doesn't support pdf's  those interested should seek out one of the printed copies that Craig distributed at the meeting (I have one ) . Suffice to say that the list of top achievements by many of our young runners was impressive . Equally important was participation , good sportsmanship and coaching . Craig thanked the people who had assisted organising the juniors and earned warm applause when affirming his intention to continue his management of the group . 2014 could be a very interesting year .Here is a download of a rough photo of Craig's report .

(  might have accidentally created a new format here )

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During discussion Margot asked what strategies the club had for promoting Senior Women's running in 2014 . Ch-Ch Avon has a pattern of losing young runners of both genders as they reach their late teens  Employment, education , lack of time and transfers are the major predators of our talent .  If all the good runners we've had over the last ten years were assembled we would have a great team : all they need to do is stay fit , stay here and stay in Ch-Ch Avon ! But even now ,with some of the junior girls available for senior relays (not Akaroa though ) , we could field some good teams in 2014 .I recall Robyn and Jane doing some good times as seniors too so count them in with Annabelle, Laura , Margot , Jessica, Julia , Natalie , Harriet , Elise , Anna , Lorna  etc etc .
I believe senior running should be in the hands of senior runners . Following her team's  success at NRR this year I fully endorse Margot to apply her knowledge and enthusiasm to this   . Some club effort should go into seeing what we can do about recruiting and retaining female members .
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was also suggested by someone at the meeting to get back to having 'pack runs ' . We all remember the days when so many runners would attend club runs that they had to be broken up into packs . I remember when  the reasons of the two or three absent were known ;  nowadays two or three turn up and the reasons of all the absent aren't even known . The reasons  are probably : working , gardening , out of town , shopping, taking children somewhere etc . Interestingly, the very person who made the suggestion was unable to attend the next scheduled club run -  for a very good reason of course , but neatly exemplifying the whole problem .

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to shatter the pessimism in the previous item,
Here is my take on our second hosted club run :
Saturday 30 Nov saw the second of the popular new hosted Club Runs . Keeping to tradition Andrew Reese -Jones led us through a worthwhile session with a generous apres-run brunch . Sited at the Club rooms encouraged a higher turnout than my run a month ago .No less than 14 arrived at the challenging hour of 8.45 am . There were groans when Andrew announced a jog to Burnside park for a set of five 1 km speed sessions . I immediately decided not to do any of them . But the weather was so balmy that when we got there I ended up running all of them !  The Council policy of setting their mowers high meant the grass was thick and slow . Schoolboy cricketers called encouragement to us .  A few lazys cut corners and didn't go around the power pole .Two even pulled out altogether citing excessive 'work do' celebrations the night before . One even turned up when we were finishing and did a lap of the track ( he only wanted the carrot cake ) .

                                                -  photo of carrot cake closely resembling the stock supplied by Andrew -

Run verdict : Salubrious , but a course map was an appreciated feature of run No 1 providing a focus for grizzles etc , plus a guide for any late arrivers .

Next  run at John Gamblins -see top of page for details .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This year another attempt was made to alter the charter of the COTY competition .Once again it was spearheaded by members of the Sumner club who put an unsuccessful motion to the AGM in 2012 .This year they presented a more formidable set of proposals along with an impressive statistical analysis to support their contentions . I'm not sure how many delegates at this year's AGM  had got their heads around the numbers . Craig Eustace had and was at the meeting to point out a fundamental flaw in one of the basic assumptions (which overturned most of their conclusions iohos ) .I'm not sure the Sumner delegate had understood this because he countered that Craig's conclusions actually supported his own (which I can confidently say was not the case  ) .A fair bit of discussion ensued and quite passionate contributions were made , which shows the ' COTY'  is a well regarded competition .Eventually the number of proposals diffused the focus and the whole matter was entrusted to the Committee to decide later .
A sub motion to introduce a double points round was defeated as was one to make the MW 50 grade a separate counting grade (to the best of my memory ) .

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A little bit of humour .This is about cycling but much of it applies to running . It's been around for a while but I got some fresh laughs out of it so maybe you will too ..

" Cyclists are the biggest sandbaggers and secret trainers around. They'll say anything to soften you up for the kill. Don't let this happen to you. Study this handy rider's phrasebook to find out what they really mean when they say:

"I'm out of shape."

Translation: I ride 400 miles a week and haven't missed a day since the Shipley government . I replace my 11-tooth cog more often than you wash your shorts. My body fat percentage is lower than your mortgage rate.

"I'm not into competition. I'm just riding to stay in shape."

Translation: I will attack until you collapse in the gutter, babbling and whimpering. I will win the sprint if I have to force you into a pine tree. I will crest this hill first if I have to grab your seat post, and spray energy drink in your eyes.

"I'm on my beater bike."

Translation: I had this baby custom-made in Tuscany using Titanium blessed by the Pope. I took it to a wind tunnel and it disappeared. It weighs less than a fart and costs more than a divorce.

"It's not that hilly."
Translation: This climb lasts longer than an election campaign. Be careful on the steep sections or you'll fall over -- backward. You have a 39x23 low gear? Here's the name of my knee surgeon.

"This is a no-drop ride."
Translation: I'll need an article of your clothing for the search-and-rescue dogs.

"It's not that far."
Translation: Bring your passport.
