August 1 Update

the Winter is finally weakening . After -work runs can almost be done with daylight to spare and sunshine to start .Soon the nagging cold winds of Spring will spoil it all ! The Riverside relay opened the road
relay part of the season . Report and photos below...
A new header photo (Elise ) : Dave has had his 15 minutes of fame ! I will change these more regularly from now on .

Latest news :

GOLD at NZXC  !
-MARGOT GIBSON is the new NZ Under 20 Women's Cross Country Champion .
 -The CHAV CANTERBURY team of Sean Eustace (5th), Cam Avery (7th), Jacob Reese-Jones (11th) and Matt Prest (19th) won Gold in the Youth Men's Grade (15-17)   !
-Rodger Ward  won a Bronze in his VM 60 Grade.

Looking through the results :
Margot won by 13 seconds;
 Nick ran close to old clubmate Dave Catherwood ;
 Richard Bennett (Pap Toc H ) was fastest Vet man of any age ;
 Rodger was only a minute behind Richie Merrett;
Richie Merrett led a Canty rep in ;
 Andrew R/Jones ran a good race in a tough grade field.
Nicki McFadzien (long time CHAV Junior ) won the Senior Womens 8 km title .

Here is an eye witness account by Andrew R/J (?) :
" It would have to be the worst case of weather forecasting I've seen in many years - thankfully it went in our favour.  The rain forecast for Friday and Saturday never arrived and instead we had a lovely sunny day with a bit of breeze to stop it getting too warm.  Last year the same course was a swamp and largely underwater.  Not so this year with great conditions.  It is still a challenging course at Minogue Park and many started a bit quick with the first half of the course on the flat (apart from a couple of hay bale obstacles set close together at an awkward spacing).  The second half of the course is all up and down with a small hill followed straight after by a steep climb which leads into a fast flowing downhill and then another up and over to complete the 2km lap.
9 CHAV runners did the club and Canterbury proud with 7 of them returning home with medals to show for their efforts.
CHAV results:
U18 Men - 6km
Sean Eustace            - 5th - 19:37
Cameron Avery         - 6th - 19:44
Jacob Reese-Jones - 11th - 20:09
Matt Prest                 - 19th - 20:43
In a very competitive age group these four combined to win Team Gold by 4 points ahead of Auckland.  All 4 have another season in this grade and will be very keen to defend their title in ChCh next year as well as look for individual medals.

Senior Men - 12km
Nick Merrett - 37th - 44:58
 Nick is only in his second season as a senior runner and training at the moment is focussed more on building fitness ahead of his return to Florida this week where he is studying on a running scholarship.  By completing the 6 man Canterbury team Nick will be able to take a NZ Champs Team Silver medal away with him as a souvenir.

Masters Men - 8km
Andrew Reese-Jones - 32nd - 30:02 - 11th M45-49
Richard Merrett          - 49th - 32:01 - 10th M50-54
Rodger Ward              - 58th - 33:11 - 3rd M60-64
Rodger's Individual Bronze medal for his age group was the major highlight from our three mature gentleman runners.  Andrew ran in Canterbury colours and was a counting member of their team, but sadly it was a case of so near but so far as they finished 4th just 4 points out of the medals.  Richard Merrett overcame an administration merry-go-round to make it to the start line and achieved his goal of finishing ahead of the Canterbury selected runner in his age group.

1 -   Club Road Champs . Saturday 10 th August at North  Hagley Park as usual .5000m for Seniors and Vets .    Start at 2.30 pm .Weather ... variable .

2- Canterbury Road champs - You need to be entered by Sunday 11 August (midnight ) .An application Form was sent to everyone recently .
 The Champs will be held at Burwood Landfill rd -
Note , times listed in Programme booklet are INCORRECT .

3- Timaru Gorges Relay scheduled for August 24 th August . This has been scaled down from an 8 lap scenic course to a 5 lap repeat course ie all five team members run the same lap in succession .We aren't even sure it's a handicap event anymore . It would be exciting if all teams started at once .There would be a whole convoy of support cars taking off down Morgans rd following their opening runners. And the cars would have to go round the course every time a new team member took off . Indy 500 anybody ? There is still time to enter this .We had a team of five , but a few of them lost some interest on learning about the course changes.

4- Greta Valley relay is probably a better pick than Timaru now . It's closer to town ; closer to Takahe / Akaroa and is a true circuit relay . We really need to get a team into this for 2013 . There are still a couple of lap records that could take pruning (though most have tightened up in the last couple of years ) . Set for Sat 21 st September (2 weeks before Takahe /Akaroa ) .I'll send an Application Form out soon .

5 -Takahe /Akaroa this year is National Road Relay Champs .A big year for Canterbury clubs to be at their best so make sure we all get our distances , speed and hillwork  topped up to be ready to tackle any lap the selectors honor you with. A preview Form has gone out and a lot of CHA runners have responded . A  few have specified no downhill laps ! to which the reply is :  There are no guarantees in relays and there are no easy laps in 'Akaroa' .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Riverside Relay ( Sat 27 th July ) .The first road relay of the season and a very nice late winter's day made for great racing around the bridges on Hunter Terrace . Pap Toc-H took over responsibility for the event this year and a lot of chch avon people were able to enjoy it without the tasks of setting up and marshalling, which we had been doing for many years .Toc -H had a very enthusisatic team  onsite and managed the event very well (apart from one or two little handicapping irregularities, which just so happened to affect ...OUR teams  ) .We had good results in the S/Men and V/Mens No .1 teams .The S/Womens No.1 team got gradually diluted during the lead-up to race day and was far from a full strength unit , but the team that ran all had strong runs .
Here are some observations :

1- Our Sen Mens 1 team were third on time and handicap (only 19 seconds off first h/cap place )

2- The Sen Mens 2 team were good enough to get 5 th fastest time .

3- Richard Seigne ran 16.41 on a slow course to get 6th best Vet time.

4- Elise Sutherland and Natalie Dryden ran 5th and 6th fastest Sen Women.

5- Robyn Perkins was 5th fastest Vet woman out of 32 .

6 -Richie Merrett continued his unerring ability to run a few seconds better than John Gam (whether he runs before ,with or after him ! )

7- Matt D , Cameron and Sean  ran within 5 seconds of each other , and all under 16 mins .

8- From a selection point of view I knew that Anthony R and Matt P would be out to prove me wrong and I thought they would... BUT ... Rodger and Jacob deserved their places .
 The SM 1 team would have got 2nd place on time *
The VM 1 team wouldn't have improved on their 2nd fastest placing .
*Looking at the NZXC results Jacob and Matt's placings were reversed so ... 'swings and roundabouts '

9- Thanks to Andrea , Chris and Lutz who were unable to run due to insufficient runners to fill their team .Chris and lutz were on standby as reserves too .

Here are a few photos :

Another shot of Elise who had a good run .

Joey Dwyer running for the Senior Mens 2 team .

Iain in his first race for six months .

Sean nearing the finish .

Anne gets a call up to a CHA Sen Womens No 1 team (unknown junior leads her )

Gary warming up before his run .

Richie passes a team as he completes his second ( ?) lap .

Richard  about to pass Lorna Pairman on his way to a 16.41 .

Dan Coats showing good running form for the Sen Mens 2 team .

Matt Prest in his foot -glove shoes .
Cameron on sub 16 pace ...the new Peter Renner ?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some misc news :
1- Dave Slaten ,who ran with CHA a couple of years ago, related he doesnt get much time to run now but his last good race was the New Orleans Half Marathon where he got about 140 th in a field of about 5000 in 1 hr 33 .
2- Several CHCH Avon runners did well in a duathlon held on Ruapuna race track on July 28 .Laura Wood and Emma Crichton were well up in the results , and Jane and Lorna Pairman also featured .
3 - Good quotes :
"If you want to stay No 1 you have to train like No 2 "
"Perseverance is the hard work you do after you're tired from the hard work you've already done "

4- Take a last look at this cup won by CHCH Avon at Akaroa in 2012

Here is a message from Laura Wood :

" My sister Emily and I are running in the Auckland Half Marathon in November this year to raise money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation in honour of our Grandmother. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer earlier this year but thanks to early detection and successful surgery, she has made a great recovery.

 The link to make a contribution is http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/LauraandEmilyWood/ , and we would love fellow Christchurch Avon members to consider making a donation.
Many thanks,
Laura "
(  I have just pledged $20 to the fund .I hope it doesn't mean $ 20 per km ! ~ mv )

Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge
18km Trail Run or 12km Trail Walk - Saturday 2nd November, 2013

Entries for the Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge are now open.

The Bell Hill Challenge is an exciting new off-road concept for the Canterbury sports scene.

Situated at Belldoon Farm in the Selwyn Plantation Block, approx 60k west of Christchurch, this 18k run or 12k walk takes participants on a scenic tour of the regions most historic but hidden landmarks....
Bell Hill, found just a few kilometers from Sheffield, was a major landmark used by early settlers as they traveled inland from Christchurch into the foothills and mountains behind Christchurch. At 960m high, Bell Hill summit can be seen from every angle in the surrounding region and once on top the view stretches for more than 30 kilometers in all directions.
The 18k Run and 12k Walk heads up to Bell Hill summit, before continuing on a loop on tussock ridges and forestry tracks above the Selwyn River back blocks. The course is steep in places, taking in tussock farm lands, 4WD drive and single tracks. This course is wonderfully remote but eminently achievable, and is otherwise closed to the public. So it’s a great chance for runners and walkers of all ability to experience one of Canterbury’s hidden gems.
The Bell Hill Challenge is a great way to kick start your summer. It's also great training for other events like Kepler Challenge, Coast to Coast and the Avalanche Peak Challenge, which is also now open for entries...
