Here's a plug for an event that may fit in with your training .
" The 4th Ashley Forest half marathon and 10k run/walk will start at 10:00 on Sunday 1 st September.
The event is run as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to North Loburn School.

Last year we had almost 300 entrants with a range from club runners to walkers, young and old.

The event goes back to basics with a local feel, relaxed atmosphere, slightly inaccurate distances, low entry fee, plenty of spot prizes and no place prizes.

The course is all off the tarmac in the Ashley Forest, on hilly forestry roads with views out to the ocean (weather permitting!)

Entries and further information can be found at
www.northloburn.school.nz.

Cheers, Colin"

Opening night for Junior Athletics this year will be Wed 16 th October . Registration night will be on the Monday 14 th October between 5 and 6.30 pm at the Clubrooms near tennis courts off Greers Rd.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Results are already out for the Timaru 5 lap relay (formerly "Round the Gorges " ). Good to see the event was well attended by local and visiting clubs with quite a number from Christchurch .This will give the local organizing club (Aorangi)  encouragement to keep hosting the event . Hopefully, even a return to the familiar "Gorges" format will make a return .

There was a full article ready to post on the Club Road Champs held on Saturday 10 August ...BUT.... it has disappeared . In the past I would rack my brain to remember what I'd written (and it's amazing how this can be done ) but I just don't have the energy : (   Suffice to say it was a grey chilly sunless day ; there were about 28 runners in the 5km and many kids in the 3 and 2 km ; and there were many good efforts put in .

Canterbury Road Champs -August 17 th 2013 .

Another grey drizzly day but not quite so cold as last week (our club champs) .This year saw it return to Landfill Rd in the Burwood plantation after a couple of years at Pegasus .What had changed ? The entrance to the road had been tastefully 'enhanced ' (as cricket ovallers might express it ).Huge wooden embankments on both sides with wide grassed berms made for a pleasant drive in. Also, parts of the forest had been chopped and juvenile pines were springing up to replace them. It used to be a cathedral-like atmosphere all the way to the furthest turn, but a pine- weedy look has taken over now near the top of the course . It is still a very good place to hold a road running event .
Despite the weather the Christchurch running community had a good day and saw some very good racing . CHA had 78 entries in the various categories .There were a few withdrawls due to sickness - notably Laura W who would possibly have medalled in the Sen Womens event .Richie Merrett also couln't run and it's debatable whether he'd have pipped Johnny G : )
So ,not all of our adult runners were there,  but  those who were achieved some very good results  .

Thanks Sarah for the great photos!  Check them out here -> Canterbury Road Champs Photos

Here are some highlights I observed :

- Chris Dryden winning the B13/14 grade in a ferocious display of solo running .He cut out the 4 km in 13.22 which would translate to 26.44 for 8km.  Watch this guy.

- Robyn ran second placed VW45 and got 4th fastest VW of any age .

- Courteney won the 5km Walk U20 title

-Margot cleared out to win the combined J/Womens etc race in a 5km PB (?) of  17.21 .

- Matt D was back to his best winning the J/Men 8km title in 26.08 and sat with Sean and Cam for about 5km .Matt was 'crook as' last week during Club Champs .

-Sean and Cam clearing out in the Y/Mens race with Sean outkicking Cameron by a few seconds.

- Annabelle scooping 3rd S/Womens place in 39 mins 68 seconds : )

-Greg wore a ' modern ' CHA singlet and ran a good M50  39.05

-Jacob R/J  finishing powerfully to claim 3rd Y/Men spot in a very strong field .

-John Gamblin claimed 2nd M50 time after a full morning's work setting up.

-Andrew R/J turned the tables on his Port Hills adversary to get 4 th M45 .

-Rodger was second M60 in an almost qualifier time for National team selection .

-me finishing a race and picking up Dave Tyrrell* in the last 800 m .Also getting lapped by Richard Seigne as he raced in for the M50 title .

* to be fair , Dave pinged a calf, but he was running corners wide and I was gaining .

Here are a few cellphone shots -

Chris wins the B14 grade (4 km 13.22)

Latham breaks clear of bunch .
Richard with Don G and Dave MacD .

" Please make a note that our annual relays (fka '2 person relay')  will again be held on the second Saturday in October (12th October 2013 one week after Akaroa).
As usual we will have lots of whitebait, West Coast hospitality and hopefully lots of lovely West Coast sunshine (sorry about last year).
We hope to have the entry forms out within the next few weeks. Our graphic artist is currently on safari in South Africa."

CHUKA'S RUN :
Sunday November 3
"   Chucka's Run is an run that I arrange each year to give people training for the Kepler a chance to do a good long run one month out and is also good for those that like a good run offroad which this is. There are two distances the first which is 28km and the second which is 35km. I organise a bus which will leave from Hansen Park at 8am and head out to our starting point which is the Hilltop Tavern, we make one stop at Little River on the way. The run starts by going aling the Summit Road for about 400m before we turn left into a track which takes us above the bush line where we will regroup and head off on our journey across the tops and we will split into packs at the first style.
Both courses go the same way along the tops and up to the top of Mount Herbert and from here they go different ways the 28km goes down to Diamond Harbour where the bus will be waiting and the 35km goes past the Mount Herbert Shelter and from around Mount Bradley using the back track which should be cleared of gorse so they tell me to the Packhorse Hut and from there to Gebbies Pass and down the road for a couple of kms to the finish at Teddingten Tavern where the bus will end up.
You need to carry some gear in case the weather changes and the cost is only $25.
If you want to come aling for a great day I can be contacted by e-mail chucka@clear.net.nz or 9808395 or 0273587153."

People who don't attend our AGMs miss hearing various reports . Reading Marilyn's summary of Summer Junior running is inspiring .

" Summer Junior Club Captain’s Report 2012-2013 Season

This season we had around 200 registered Junior athletes. Some dropped off fairly quickly –and then more stopped coming after Xmas –leaving us with a regular core of around 150 club night members.

We settled the kids in fairly quickly into our usual pattern at club nights –
a mix of skills coaching and competition with a firm emphasis on good behaviour, manners, sportsmanship and obeying the rules.
The children learn very quickly what is expected of them at club night and soon realise that they will gain far more from club nights when everyone fits into the Chav way of running things. They were a very well-behaved group of athletes this season.

We were extremely lucky with the weather this year –and although we had some very cold, windy nights –we had very little rain.

The parent-help roster continued to work really well –thanks Rae and Jackie

This season we were fortunate to be able to call on some help from our previous season’s 15yr old leavers. Sean, Matt, Jacob, Chris, Kate and Katie were able to come down most weeks and help with small groups for sprint, relay, hurdles and jumps skills. They were enthusiastic, encouraging and knowledgeable about the various events and had a good rapport with the youngsters.

This was really successful – and meant that we were able to offer a worthwhile skills programme to our Wednesday-only athletes

As usual –we implemented our popular 5 * Award scheme – awarding hundreds of certificates. Temwa Chileshe, Cullen Moody, Maka Nui and Jake Nicholls all achieved the top Level 5 award

Graeme and Sarah ran our Kiwisport programme again with our young 5/6yr old athletes. They do an amazing job and have endless patience while teaching these very young athletes the basic skills of running, jumping and throwing. They make sure the children listen to instructions and follow the rules of club-night. We have them to thank for the way these young athletes behave, participate fully in club night and improve their athletic and social skills along the way

All the Kiwisport kids love the sessions which were fun , interesting and varied every week.

Most of these youngsters took part in Club Champs Day and this season 3 of them competed at regular Saturday Inter Club meetings as well in the 7yr Grade.

Madi Thomas (6yrs) was also chosen to represent Canterbury at the 995 meet at Rawiti Domain in March – a fantastic achievement for a 6yr old!

Our Junior Club Champs Day in February was well-attended and a great success –with the athletes enjoying a mix of serious competition and some fun events. Our Senior Girls came dressed up as famous athletes – so we had Sally Pearson, Usain Bolt, Valerie Adams and others all competing against each other in the various events!
Not to be outdone –our Senior boys entered an interesting “Family Relay Team “ –complete with great costumes!

Our athletes enjoyed the annual Ribbon night in March –with everyone entering into the spirit of the handicapped races for our club ribbons.

Our final night of the season started with fun and games on the field at Russley School , followed by a delicious shared tea and then prize-giving in the Russley School Hall.
Many of our athletes received trophies, certificates and medals to mark their achievements throughout the season. This function is always tinged with sadness too - as we have to farewell our 14yr old athletes –many of whom have been with us in the Juniors for many years  and have played a very important part in the Chav club. We wish them all luck as they enter the ranks of Senior athletics next season.

We continued to provide quality coaching for our 10-14yr. Saturday athletes.
Mondays are coaching nights –with Juniors from 4.40pm and Seniors from 6.10pm. Almost all of the athletes in these squads improved in their events over the season as a result of the work done by our squad coaches.
Tuesday nights were middle-distance training nights – when a small group of around 8-10 athletes benefitted greatly from weekly training taken by Nikki McFadzien (following Maria Hassan’s MD programme ).
Anita Sutherland continued to run sessions on Wednesday nights for 15/16yr Chav athletes.
We provided extra coaching sessions for those athletes attending the Colgate games, those selected in Canterbury Rep teams and those involved in Secondary Schools Competitions.
Our Chav Junior coaching programme continues to be highly successful –with our young athletes benefitting from the expert help of our great young coaches ."

I read an interesting article in a local newspaper about the increasing number of males in their 40 s and 50 s lining up for hip and knee replacements in the U.K . This is a result of the phenomenon of exercise addiction .More than 90,000 hips and 70,000 knees are replaced annually in England and Wales (a figure which includes age and obesity related related operations ) . Impact injuries to cartilage in sporty types leads to osteo problems and eventual joint replacements .  BUT .... it was reported that runners aren't incurring these problems in any proportion to their numbers .It is posited that runners avoid the problem because they use their joints in a uniform non -traumatic way . The familiar story that marathon runners have the most dense leg bones of any class of human being suggests the possibility of correspondingly healthy cartilage . Personally, I dont think I have any osteoarthritis -   but I certainly get sore muscles after unaccustomedly hard runs : )
