Canterbury Cross Champs (July 13 ) with photos

A gloomy drizzly morning cleared out at the quarry by 1 pm . A couple of races were run in pleasant sunshine .
Then the gloom returned and the temperature dropped . But it didn't rain . Not to say that there wasn't any water on the course though : it was a slush bath .There were three creek jumps per lap which meant eveyone got wet cold feet . Other parts of the course were long stretches of deep, but light, mud, on solid substrata. Everyone got mud up the backs of their legs and bodies . Some people slipped over and got even more muddy (generally people without spikes ). Some people with spikes got cuts to the ankles etc (photo below ) .

CHCH Avon had a very good day in many races (though we didn't enter many runners )  .

Highlights (in no particular order ):
1- Chris D said last week he was only worried by one runner -he needn't have worried .
2- Margot had a blinder of a race when it counted and took away the J/Womens title  .
3 - Elise also had a big run to claim 2nd Junior Womens prize.
4- Natalie had a very good early race to claim 3rd Youth Women placing .
5- Sean and Matt won the same titles they got at the S.I Champs .
6- Andrew R/J almost beat Kerry Faas : )
7- Nick got a solid 10th place in a quality Senior field (and got 3 rd in the new 20/21 grade )
8- Robyn took 3rd MW 45 , but almost did a lot better .
9- Rodger and Richie placed well in their grades .
10- Latham and Jacob part of winning trifecta in Youth Mens grade (photo below )
Nick- 3rd placed Mens 20/21 (photo courtesy Gamcorp)

Good to see Dave T and Anthony racing again . Paul Clark also starting to go ok again, but wearing his Auck Uni vest at the moment . Also the first delivery of the new club tops arrived and a lot of our runners were sporting them proudly . As Bruce Willis once said " It's not everyone can wear safety orange " .The orange tops looked good on the people who looked good in them . I liked the blue tops and ordered one of them . Some have bought one of each ,  and at $55 that's not a bad option .

Results here soon.RESULTS
The reason there are no pictures of the Mens race is because I was running in it .

Club Dinner : Reports have come in that this went very well .The minimum of sixty persons was reached during the week and Winnie Bagoes accepted the group booking .Plans are being made to do an even bigger event later in the year.

Here is a message from Laura Wood :

" My sister Emily and I are running in the Auckland Half Marathon in November this year to raise money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation in honour of our Grandmother. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer earlier this year but thanks to early detection and successful surgery, she has made a great recovery.

The link to make a contribution is http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/LauraandEmilyWood/ , and we would love fellow Christchurch Avon members to consider making a donation.

Many thanks,
Laura "
(  I have just pledged $20 to the fund .I hope it doesn't mean $20 per km ! ~ m.v )

Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge
18km Trail Run or 12km Trail Walk - Saturday 2nd November, 2013

Entries for the Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge are now open.

The Bell Hill Challenge is an exciting new off-road concept for the Canterbury sports scene.

Situated at Belldoon Farm in the Selwyn Plantation Block, approx 60k west of Christchurch, this 18k run or 12k walk takes participants on a scenic tour of the regions most historic but hidden landmarks....
Bell Hill, found just a few kilometers from Sheffield, was a major landmark used by early settlers as they traveled inland from Christchurch into the foothills and mountains behind Christchurch. At 960m high, Bell Hill summit can be seen from every angle in the surrounding region and once on top the view stretches for more than 30 kilometers in all directions.
The 18k Run and 12k Walk heads up to Bell Hill summit, before continuing on a loop on tussock ridges and forestry tracks above the Selwyn River back blocks. The course is steep in places, taking in tussock farm lands, 4WD drive and single tracks. This course is wonderfully remote but eminently achievable, and is otherwise closed to the public. So it’s a great chance for runners and walkers of all ability to experience one of Canterbury’s hidden gems.
The Bell Hill Challenge is a great way to kick start your summer. It's also great training for other events like Kepler Challenge, Coast to Coast and the Avalanche Peak Challenge, which is also now open for entries...
