Holloway Report (Sat June 8th ) :
As seen on the photos the weather was stunning : calm warm conditions with sun and interesting cloud formations .The course was firm on most parts, but recent rain made some corners a bit muddy - people without spikes took wide radii around these bits . There were good numbers in most races and a fair representation of CHA runners . This race is generally considered the toughest cross country event on the winter calendar - I know people in CHA who avoid it as a matter of course ! Today I found it almost ok .Why ? well I accepted a lift from Rodger and Robyn instead of biking out and I grudgingly admit that it made a difference to my overall energy and endurance ie I finished . The distances for most races are longer than any other event and the terrain is easily the toughest on offer . 12 km of it for seniors and vet men is a long day .The Cust hotel profited from the fatigue .
Here is an extract from the Junior News.
" Unofficially, we think it has been another great day for us in the Club of the Year points race. The juniors really carried us through today with strong team results in the early races. Special mention has to go firstly to our 11 & 12 girls who managed 3 complete teams in their race and these 3 teams finished 1, 2 & 3 - OUTSTANDING. Our other grade win came in the Men 15 - 19 grade where our depth of numbers also shone through. This is one of the best cross country races in our winter calendar, but very badly timed for our secondary school runners one week before their NZ Champs. So thank you to this group of young men who travelled out for a mostly relaxed training run which still produced 1st and 3rd team places - "
Matt at 90 % effort .
Robyn moving through the vets .
The 15-19 Junior Men group (out of focus ) .
Highlights
- Margot and Elise had good runs in the W18/19 grade with 1st and 3rd spots over 4 km
- Nick Merrett ran a impressive senior run in the Mens 12 km to get 3rd place in 41 minutes 21 secs. The inside word is that Barry Magee advised him to take Ca/Mg tablets for tight muscles.
- Robyn Perkins -1st MW 45- 8km only a week out from her marathon.
- Matt Dryden on a fast training run got 2nd M19 in 29.00 for 8 km
- Rodger scored 2nd M55 in the 12 km event - he was one day shy of the M60 grade but would only have got 3 rd place there ! POSTSCRIPT - the results changed overnight and Rodger has been assigned VM 60 status .Yay , this moves me to 4 th place in the M55 s .
- Emma Crichton biked out there (40 km ) and ran 4th MW 35 (then biked back : )
- Andrea Stocks ran well for 4th VW 40 .
- Craig , Gary and I finished the 12 km to make up a scoring VM team (hopefully ).

I learned how Greg B is posting such good runs at the moment : he decided to stay fit after Ironman in March . Good diet and regular training are the keys - his 1.24 Half last weekend is testament to the efficacy of that .
In misc news Gary P said he got a good look at the Lionel Fox cup that Andrew won last week. The cup is for first local veteran home in the CHCH marathon. Lionel Fox's name was on it a few times , but so were some CHA vets like John Gamblin , Denis Christmas and Gavin Donaldson (?)

1- Remember that Rodger is leading Club runs at 5 .45 pm on Wednesday evenings from the Harewood Tavern Clocktower .
2- Re-instating Sunday morning runs .
"Starting from Sunday 28th April all adult members and parents of runners are invited to join our club runs. These will leave the Sign of the TAKAHE at 8:30am. The aim is to run with like -minded people for about 90 minutes. We anticipate a couple of groups so there will be a pace which suits you! We will adjourn to Zeroes Cafe (bottom of Hackthorne Road) from 10:15am. Non-runners and cyclists can join us there for social interaction. " (ie tales of doubtful veracity )
