Update June 3 2013.

Queen's Birthday Weekend June 2 saw the annual running of the Christchurch marathon and associated races.
The total entry was nearly up to pre -earthquake levels (approx 5000). The weather was almost balmy in the early morning , but a light wind became stronger as the day progressed .For the half and full marathon this wind was a considerable hindrance, and times reflected this.
The club put in it's usual team to marshall at the 10 km turnaround and we had quite a bit of fun (as well as making some $$ )
Several CHA runners figured in the various races . Here is a summary of the day shamelessly pillaged from the Junior news : )

"Full Results can be searched here -> Christchurch Marathon Results

"Full Marathon 42.2km: Andrew Reese-Jones master coach of the year 5-8 group and also master runner finished 5th overall this year.  The wind slowed him down a bit on previous attempts, but his 2:46:15 placed him 3rd in the M40 grade and as first Canterbury runner to finish Andrew wins the Canterbury Marathon title.
"Robyn Perkins was our other full marathoner in action yesterday finishing in 3:43:08 which gave her 9th in the W40 grade.

"Half Marathon 21.1km: Richard Seigne opted for the half distance race this year ran an outstanding 1:16:39 to win the M50 grade by nearly 3 minutes.  CHAV had a bit of a stranglehold in this grade with Greg Bramwell 4th in 1:24:45, Rodger Ward 7th in 1:28:25 (and for the sake of a few days Rodger would have been a very close 2nd in the M60 grade - Happy Birthday Rodger), Richard Merrett 10th in 1:30:27 and  Gary Prest with 1:43:14 smashed his goal of 1:50:00.

"10km: Matthew Dryden 1st 33:10, Matthew Prest 2nd 34:03 and Latham Fairhall 3rd 35:07 dominated the Junior Mens category.  Latham lost a bit of time at the start when someone trod on the back of his shoe and pulled it off.  Nick Merrett on "summer" holiday from his Florida University Scholarship was also in the mix with a 34:37 for 13th Senior Man.  Jessica Schofield continues to go from strength to strength and won the Junior Womens grade with 40:43.

"Mara'fun 3km: Christopher Dryden was the clear winner running away by nearly a minute from the rest of the field to finish in 10:38.  Older sister Natalie was the next CHAV runner to finish and was just pipped into 2nd place in the Girls 13-15 grade in a big sprint finish.  Jared Neighbours was also clear in 3rd in the Boys 13-15 grade."

In no particular order :
Matt Dryden - 10 km - 33 .10 (7th o/all)
Matt Prest - 10 km - 34.03
Robyn Perkins - marathon - 3 hrs 43.08 min

Saturday 24 th May 2013 - A perfect day for our XC Champs . Light frost in morning but a nice warm sunny early winter type day .About three hours work in the morning had the course all set up by 12.30 pm. Two personal lawnmowers were needed to cut a track through the grass . A portaloo was already on course and we assumed it was ours (the runners certainly used it ) .
By 2.30 the sun was blazing low in the sky .A  photo shoot was convened (below) and then the Senior section set off en masse .The children took off a minute later . The course is a tough one at any time but after a week's rain the ground got quite boggy as well . For older runners this is hard on weak hip muscles . For me , last week's hard run at Jane Pats was too soon ago and I withdrew after a lap .This was a good move because I watched all the good racing from the finish line .
The Youth/ Men only had to do 2 laps (3.96 km ) .Sean Eustace seemed to be running off the tips of his toes as he led Cameron Avery in .These guys have the optimum power to weight ratio and seemed totally unaffected by the soft ground .
All the runners moments before mass start at Rotokohatu .

The Senior Women's race was ably won by Margot Gibson. Margot has been running
well for many seasons and she worked her way around the course with clinical style .
She crossed the line after 6 kms looking fresh. It was good to see three others covering
the distance too ; Jessica , Natalie and Elise all looked strong and when Laura Wood
rejoins there will be a good team nucleus.

Matt Dryden won the Junior Mens 8 km race and was fastest finisher overall, so will
take the SM trophy ? Strong finishers were Nick Findlay  and Dan Coats for 2nd and 3 rd .
Nick Merrett was still a bit flu affected, but cruised around for a good 4th place.

Richard Seigne was an unchallenged winner of the Vet Mens as Andrew R/J
opted to miss this one (saving himself for ChCh marathon it later emerged )

Robyn Perkins  nabbed the Vet women's title over Emma Crichton .
Robyn had been a bit apprehensive of Emma's chances but ended up a clear winner -
it could be said that she may have given Jane a hard run had she been there.

Results are on pdf which isn't supported by this blog . email me for a copy .

I went along to the Canterbury Awards dinner on Friday 24 th May .Held in the Cashmere club
it was very pleasant and it was possible to follow the progress of the Crusaders match from the
noise in adjacent bars . About 12 tables of attendees enjoyed a nice meal and dessert before the presentations .
CHCH Avon's own John and Victor once again conducted the ceremonies . The depth of candidates in the various categories showed the talent that exists within the region. A solid showing of winners from South Canterbury highlighted the effect of losing QE2 on Christchurch .An all weather track must be restored to the city soon .

There was some good natured banter onstage between John and Daniel R as athletes from the
UNI club began to figure prominently among the winners .John observed that  a CHA Junior team won the Hagley relay this year and that Sam Wreford originally ran for us !

Our only category candidate was Matt Dryden who was shortlisted for the middle distance athlete of the year .Matt has been one of the hardest working runners around and advanced his PB's correspondingly .But against prodigy Rosa Flanagan his chances of a win were reduced .Matt received a blazer patch .The club formally received the 'Costley Spike ' and Tannock Blair received an award (below ) .
The Coach of the Year award had about 7 nominees and I had hoped to see our own  Craig E among them . But I learned that the nomination had been misplaced . (?)
"CONGRATULATIONS to Tannock Blair - Winner of the Technical Club Trophy for Most Meritorious Performance for a Male Athlete in either the 400m, 800m, 1500m or Mile at the Athletics Canterbury Athlete of the Year Awards for 2012/13."

Many of the club's younger runners lined up three days after Club Champs to race in the Secondary Schools Champs at Halswell Quarry on Tuesday 27 May. As early as Saturday there was talk of snow hitting this event and sure enough it did arrive.Half of the races were in bright sunny cold conditions ; the other half were in grey cold sleety snowy conditions .Matt Dryden  got a nice wee photo of himself braving the weather on the top banner of the next morning's Press . He got a good second place to perennial rival Ben Musson. Brother Chris D also got his name in the paper .

whilst full results aren't available yet we can report on the 21 CHAV runners who achieved a top 10 place.
Under 14 Girls - Harriet Bush 1st, Lorna Pairman 4th, Anna Reese-Jones 10th
