1- All your days and nights of training in the rain and cold went down the proverbial gurgler as the popular Anglican Relays were cancelled a day before the event.
The wet week in Canterbury was too much, and "flooding" was given as the cause. Recalling the coldness and rain on the Saturday it would have been no fun competing even if the course had been usable .Never mind , all that fitness can go to the Kennett Cup races this weekend (Sat 29 June )
2- Robyn Perkins clocked another 3 hr 27 marathon this weekend (a 13 second PB*).She learned on Monday that she had won a Shoe Clinic draw for free entry to the Wellington event. This was only two weeks after the CHCH marathon . Robyn was confident this wouldn't be a problem for her, and true to her word she ran and took out the National age group championship(1st Vet Woman 45-49 ).
Courteney Ruske was also up there and won the entire 10 km Walk section by several minutes in a time of 52 mins 34 .This was fast enough to beat almost three quarters of the runners field !
3- Exciting news for the Womens section of CHCH Avon with Annabelle Bramwell joining and keen to do some races . Her Dad Greg has also signed up , so the Vet Men will get a boost too.
4- I finally managed to get along to one of the Wednesday night club runs . Attendance has been as high as six at these , but only Rodger and Robyn were waiting at the clocktower when I jogged up .It was raining so they were surprised to see anyone. We jogged to Nunweek park which was brightly lit . Rodger took us through a drill session on a spare soggy grass field . Having done all seven disciplines I could see why he and Robyn are doing well in their running at the moment . I made a vow to incorporate the drills into my own routine .. Tui anyone? I do recommend attending this run at least once to see what goes on .
5- Can anyone recognise the Chch avon runner on the top banner ? The shot dates back to possibly 1994 and is Canty Road Champs held around Hansen Park. This runner was on sub 32 min pace .
(answer - no prizes for guessing Dave Holland .Thanks for this photo Dave )
6- The Club Survey results have been analysed and a full report may appear in the next update. Sixty one replies were received from a cross section of seniors , juniors and parents. Some interesting conclusions were :
- A surprising number of you would be happy to volunteer to help the club operate , but dont know how to go about getting involved .
- There was strong support expressed for the people who run the club (very gratifying to those people , thanks )
- There is considerable support for regular club runs and for coaching to be made available .
- Richard Merrett was the lucky winner of the spot prize ( his shout at the next post race debrief ?)
7- The new warm-up tops will be displayed at upcoming races for members to inspect (Kennett Cup this Sat ) .There is a choice between two tops and the price will be about $65 .They are well made and quite presentable though the orange fleece model is fairly 'out there' on the color scale .At least one club member has expressed concern about their 'prospects' in orange ; so an alternative design is offered. The blue 'dry-fit ' model is made from heavier 'dry-fit' than average athletic gear and looks quite nice .Orders will be taken at races and the tops will be available sooner rather than later (the first order has gone through but another will be taken around July 12 th )
8- Great news that four of the Port Hills walking tracks have finally been re-opened for public use .The Bridle Path and Captain Thomas tracks have been sorely missed by runners over the last two years - mind you, the Press article hinted that plenty of people have been by-passing the gates on the Bridle Path anyway (and their photos have been stored for later reference by GcsB )
9- Kennett's Jewellers have had the Kennett Trophy completely refurbished and it is reported to be looking like brand new .The silver has been reburnished and the woodwork smoothed and varnished . We thank Mr Kennett for this .
10- Quite a bit of information appearing in print about the use /abuse of sugar by athletes and people in general .One article strongly discourages the trend of drinking heavily sugared sports drinks .The water and minerals they contain could easily be obtained in other ways ,and the glucose they smuggle into the body causes problems . Without any fiber to slow absorption the sugar enters the bloodstream in a rush .The body responds to this by raising insulin levels which causes fat to be stored and held - particularly by the liver .A clogged liver is unhealthy . Athletes in intense training can use these drinks in moderation. Children are vulnerable to addiction to these drinks .
Most soft drinks are sweetened with corn syrup fructose . This sugar is very sweet tasting, therefore economic to use , but it is not well handled, in large quantities , by the body .So use these drinks in moderation too .
The main minerals we need to replace from sweating are calcium, potassium and sodium .These are the so-called "electrolytes ".They regulate water flow into body cells . Sodium is said to be depleted more heavily than the other two especially in hot weather .
* word has it that the course was a tad under the full marathon distance (~600m ) -but it was windy and cold to compensate (and in the immortal words of Sean Fitzpatrick : "a win's a win , I'll take it " )

---200 Junior Men about to start ---
There was good racing and large fields in some events ( two had close to 200 runners ) .
The sound of so many hooves was quite impressive when the big fields took off .I helped in the finish chute and it was full-on escorting exhausted runners to the back of the pen .Rosa Flanagan (Canty ) won the Senior girls national title and when she finished there was no-one in the straight behind her . She just stopped under the banner, totally expended, but nowhere near collapsing (as a lot of others did ) .I wished we'd had a golden winners cloak to put around her .
Harriet Bush is a name we've heard a fair bit of over the summer and she showed she covers the rough ground as well with a 3rd place in the Girls yr 9 grade. Sean , Tannock , Dan , Nick F, Matt , Joey , Cameron and Jacob all featured in the big Junior Mens field . Matt was our leading runner for a while , but Cameron and Sean edged past .Cameron looked set to be our first finisher, but Sean used his renowned track speed to take the honor .They both scored top ten placings in very fast times .
For a different angle on the day read the Junior blog entry here :
---Chris Dryden sprinting home in 4th place--
Other highlights were seeing Chris Dryden get 4 th place in the national B14 grade. Chris is still smoothing out his style, but he doesn't lack determination and is improving rapidly . Charlotte Blair in the G 14 race is also determined and talented, finishing near the front of a large field.

For a different angle on the day read the Junior blog entry here :
"They say timing is everything and these races were timed to perfection with the rain starting towards the end of the day (and it hasn't stopped since). The organisers, ably led by our own race director supremo John Gamblin, had the course and the day perfectly prepared. Conditions were great for racing and the racing matched the occasion.
Highlighting some wonderful performances by CHAV members were Harriet Bush's individual Bronze medal and team Gold medals in both the 3 and 6 person teams for Year 9 Girls. Sean Eustace andCameron Avery were outstanding in an incredibly competitive Senior Boys race to finish in the 7th and 8th places and were rewarded with selection in the NZ Secondary School Team. To understand their achievement, the superb results of our other Senior Boys and the level of competition in this event is to note that two NZ middle distance track age group reps just squeaked inside the Senior Boys top 100 places.
Sean and Cameron were hoping for selection into the NZ Junior team to compete in the World Champs in Israel next year. This is the same World Champs that our own Margot Gibson won three years ago. They were very disappointed to learn on Thursday that a decision had been made not to select a team this year and clearly from Saturday's results both would have been automatic selections. So it was nice to see them shrug off the disappointment and run their way into the NZ Senior Team. This now gives them the opportunity to travel to Tasmania for the Australian Cross Country Champs at the end of August.
Other SUPERB top 10 results went to Chris Dryden who was 4th in the Year 9 Boys and Charlotte Blair's 7th in the Junior Girls.
"The hard luck story of the day was probably the Burnside High School CHAV 5-person Senior Boys team. Sean, Matt P, Daniel, Tannock and Nick would have taken a clear second place if there was a 5-person team grade. A 6th runner in the top 130 would have brought them a medal or top 117 for a silver. All of them will hopefully be back next year along with Angus and Hamish for a very strong 6-man team.
Our heart felt thanks to all the senior club members and parents who braved the weather, missed the rugby, and endured the noise to host a very successful after race party in the evening. Thanks - John Gamblin, Victor & Sandie Gamperle, John Ingles, Kevin Muir, Robyn Perkins, Therese Dryden, Corinne Bailey, Mel & Bob Blair, Rae & Andrew Reese-Jones, Fiona & Gary Prest, Craig Eustace, Joe Coats and Craig Fairhall.
