Run Report : I ran this one today . Almost a dewy late summer morning and a lot of people hugging themselves in the chilly air up at Victoria Park waiting for 9.30 am to arrive . Late registrations meant that extra busloads of runners kept arriving from St Martins .The start time was pushed back . Over 2400 people were assembled . Some people decided that the start was going to be too delayed to wait for and took off . I decided to do the same ; set my watch and set off on a solo time trial. I was soon on the summit road passing groups of walkers with no runners ahead of me.I didn't know that the organisers had decided to send groups of 100 runners off at staggered intervals without waiting for everyone to be ready .The first group contained all the serious runners, and they had started not long after me. They started to catch me opposite Sugarloaf. A young chap in a Christchurch Avon singlet (Latham Fairhall ) was in the lead and he went on to record 48 mins . I plugged on in the lovely clear sunny conditions running quite well. Only seven runners had passed me by the time we hit the top of the Rapaki Track . Competition certainly brings out the best and I flew down faster than I can ever remember , dodging MTBs and walkers coming up .Latham later told me his calves cramped up on this section and mine certainly felt wooden by the time the flat of Centaurus road came up. The final km into Hansen Park was hard going, but felt better whenever I kept the legs stretched out long and muscled . Gala finish area with big welcome. My time : 52.48 for 11.99 km . Some good post race food opportunities , coffee car and a music stage .

Everyone will have seen coverage of Angus Bailey (left ) and his friend saving the man who knocked himself unconscious driving into the Halswell River . Articles mention that Angus "ran"to get help. You can be sure that he would have gone pretty fast .

Weather was good for the much anticipated International Track meet on Feb 2 . Nick Willis's attempt to go under 4 mins for the mile proved too hard on grass and with a appreciable breeze against him . 4.09 wasn't bad though . The Womens 3000m was quite exciting with NZ's Lucy Van Dalen setting a hot pace which shook off all but Dutch visitor Susan Kuijken . In long black socks and with blond ponytail whipping the visitor sat on right to the end when she came out to win the home sprint by 3 seconds in 9 min 11 . Local Nicki McFadzien was well back in 9.55 approx.

News has broken about popular painkiller dichlofenac , which is the active ingredient of Voltaren and Cataflam . Dichlofenac is the most widely prescribed anti-inflammatory in the world . Many runners use these products . Research suggests that regular users risk heart attack and stroke . It is advised to use the lowest possible dose for the shortest possible time .
Yet another top international athlete in trouble , with Oscar Pistorius , aka the 'Blade Runner ' , having to explain how his partner received four gunshot wounds and skull trauma while they were at home together . He claims it was a " terrible mistake ", but prosecutors think Oscar might be telling fibulas .

Iain has had his achilles problem properly assessed - he has mildly torn the junction of the soleus muscle / achilles tendon . He has to rest for several weeks and has had to haul his original 1978 Healing bicycle out of storage to keep up some fitness .
Anthony Rogal has had achilles problems this summer too , so is concentrating on doing a lot of work for the Christchurch rebuild . Painters are in demand at the moment , and he's making hay while the sun shines .

Run Report : I popped out on March 5 after work to have a run in this event . Possibly 75 runners lined up to face a fresh Nor 'Easter in the rolling roads behind the quarry .The wind was strong for most of the first 4 km .Two short hills, but quite pinchy to get up and chances for downhill specialists to move through the field on the other side of them. From 4 to 5 km the road was under the shelter of the hills and slightly descending .I reached the turn in 22.06 .Robyn was about 200 m ahead and Richard Seigne had gone through 4 mins earlier on his way to a 35.45 min time .
Denis and Chris F were about 1 min and 2 mins behind me respectively .With a tail wind I began to wind it up and passed a few runners ,with even Robyn looking catchable ahead . At 7 km Robyn held her hand to her side and began to slow .I passed her on the first hill - she had stitch.I knew the stitch wouldnt hold her back for long so tried to build a gap .With 1.5 km to go I raised the pace to absolute max but with 150 m to go Robyn appeared . She passed and headed for the finish line.I pretty much gave up at that ( my usual response to a challenge ) but a thought occurred to give it a go : we went stride for stride and crossed the line together - 44 mins 18 secs .Denis came home in about 46.40 with Chris F another few minutes back .
Veteran Mark Bailey won in 32 mins , with Anna Zhakarova the fastest woman in just over 40 mins.
A nice sandwich and energy bar were available to all finishers .There were good spot prizes . Thanks to Vic , Sandy , John Ingles and Dan Reese for officialling .

The first of the supplemental 5 km races was held on Tuesday 12 Feb .This was identical to the recent Hagley 5 kms series but organised by the CC&R Committee instead of Port Hills club . Ch Ch Avon hosted the evening .Being slightly cool and spitty the numbers were a bit low : only 17 registered runners and five of them were from CHA . But the fun run had a field of maybe 100 ,so a bit of funding was generated . Here are some times and full results are up on Ath Canty :
Chris D - 17 .45
Rodger - 20. 21
Emily Wood - 20. 38
Robyn - 20 .44
Mike - 20.54
Richie M- 18.17
Bella B - 18. 43
Greg B - 19. 15
Denis - 21.40
The second evening was held on Feb 19 th .Conditions were fine but with ye olde fresh breeze reducing enjoyment (and times ) . The 10 km event for registered runners was quite popular. They started at the same time as the 5 km runners but a little further back .Some of the quicker guys soon made their way through the field . The same CHA runners as last week fronted again tonight .
Surprise visitor from Otago was Rachel Kingsford who clocked a good 16.58 time . The fastest 10 km runners were just on 33 mins . 23 registered runners in total and maybe 100 fun runners .
Andrew Reese -Jones - 17.25
Chris D - 17.53
Rodger -DNF
Robyn - 20. 49
Mike - 21.00
Richie M- 18.10
Greg B - 18.46
Annabelle B - 19.10
Denis - 21.31
results
Robyn is officially ' on fire ' at the moment having done a 10 km PB in the Sri Chinmoy on Sunday and backing up tonight to thrash me yet again . Richie and Greg both looked very determined as they took high placings in the fun run. Annabelle B ran more sedately (and probably wisely ) in anticipation of the their upcoming Ironman in early March .
Race 3 Report : The weather was perfect for running on the final night (Tues 26 th Feb 2013 ). very mild with only light winds .About 23 registered runners took advantage of the conditions and some fast times were recorded. Rachel Kingsford clocked 16.26 and seemed so effortless doing it .This would be one of the faster women's times ever run on the course. Our own Robyn Perkins ran a PB of 20.34 .Chris Dryden launched a challenge on Andrew R/J , sitting on his shoulder for 2 km before the pace started to tell . Chris ran a personal best of 17.26 while Andrew was only 4 seconds ahead in 17.22.
Denis ran with about 100 others in the fun run but had a rare dnf , citing "sore hips " .Chris F ran a mid 23 time and said he found conditions better than in Perth where he'd recently experienced 40 deg days .
The three race concept seems to be establishing itself . Spot prizes were generous : I won a very presentable blue T-shirt on the first night and there were two $100 vouchers awarded on other nights .
The Cashmere Downs 10 km on Tuesday March 5 is the next event out at the quarry .You can enter online by visiting EnterOnline (!) , but be in soon . $10 fee for registered runners .
Remember too that Rodger is leading Club runs at 5 .45 pm on Wednesday evenings from the Harewood Tavern Clocktower .
