Jan 28th 2013 Post

This is largely a re-hash of the last update,  so there's a bit of repetition . Additions will be made here as time goes by .

Rodger will start the Wednesday evening Club Runs for 2013 -  First one , meet   5:45 pm  from the Harewood Tavern clock ,  Wed the  6th  , Waitangi Day .

He also intends going to Timaru next Saturday 9 th Feb  for a 1500 m  and will have some spare seats in the car .   ( two standard people, or three skinnys)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dont forget this weekend :

Nick Willis is the big drawcard and ran a snappy 3000m this week (7 min 57 ).  He will contest a mile on grass against two strong overseas runners (Petr Kaminski and Luke Matthews ) . Lucy Van Dalen and Susan Kuijken head a strong Womens 3 km field which also  includes NZrs Angie Smit , Rebekah Greene Nicki McFadzien and Rosa Flanagan .
Tickets still available   http://internationaltrackmeet.co.nz/

On Sat Feb 2nd, the International Track Meet will be held for the second time at the Christ's College Track. The organizing committee is appealing to the Track and field enthusiasts of Canterbury for help with the set up and running of this event which does a lot to raise the profile of our sport in Canterbury.
Help is required to set up the venue on Friday and Saturday, to fill race packs and to assist the athletes and monitor the crowd on Saturday afternoon as well as help with gate sales.
All volunteers will be given free entry to the Meet and lunch on Saturday.
We are also looking for people who have a spare bed who would be willing to billet an athlete from out of town.
I either case , Contact Tony McManus on 027 442 7611 or email Margaret Flanagan on flanaganmargaret@hotmail.com

The first Hagley 5km race (Shoe Clinic /Asics ) was held in fine but windy conditions on the same course as last year (Start /Finish near the croquet courts ) .By all accounts the distance was accurately set by Mr Don Greig .There was a strong head wind turning left at Nancy's corner and there was considerable jockeying in the bunches to find someone to shelter behind .But the long straight by the golf course was tail wind (though sunny ) .Not a whole lot of CHCH Avon runners there . The reg race had 67 total entrants and the fun run over 300 . Interesting that the fun run had a few fast runners but then the talent dwindled suddenly such that Richie Merrett was able to get about 6th place (Rich was still in the 'talent' section ) .His time of 18.40 wasn't bad for a 50 year old in full training for an Ironman . Fellow M50 Greg Bramwell cruised  through in just under 20 mins, closely followed by his daughter Annabelle . Denis was the only other face there in about 22.50 .

In the registered race Matt Dryden and Cameron Avery placed highly .These two are hard workers and their improvement has been truly exponential .Iain Chinnery , back from a minor injury , was 2nd in the M55 grade .
Results :

Matt - 15.38 - 2nd SM and 3rd overall
Cameron -  16.13 - 4th SM and 6th overall
Richard S  -16.56  -2nd M 45
John Gam  - 19.44 - 9th M 45
Iain  - 20.34  - 2nd M 55
Mike - 21. 24  - 6th M 55
Richie M -18.40 approx
Greg B  - 19.50 approx .
Denis C - 22.50 approx .

The second Hagley 5km race (Jan 15 ) was held in cool drizzly conditions with a slight Swest breeze. Many runners found this ideal running weather and went quicker than last week. Richard Seigne pared his time down to 16.40 - a PB on this course for him (?)  and pretty good going for someone soon to click over to 50 years  .
Matt Dryden trimmed a few seconds off last week , as did John Gamblin, Richie M, Denis , Greg and Annabelle . A few more of the younger runners ( Tannock and Jacob ) also had their first outings . Still not many CHA runners there though - where are Robyn and Jane , Margot and Lydia , Rodger and Anthony ?to name a few. Chris F did the fun run  with 250 others in 23.55.
Results : (apologies if you were there and I missed you )

Matt D- 15.33 -   4th SM -  5 th O/All
Cameron A - 16.08 - 6th SM - 9th O/All
Jacob R/J     -  17.12
Tannock B - 17.35
Chris D - 18.28
Richard S- 16.40 -  3rd VM 45
John Gamblin -  19.33
Iain C-  20.18 -  2nd VM 55 (by a second )
Mike V - 21.28   - 5th VM 55
Richie M - 18.30
Greg B -    19.00 approx
Annabelle B -  19.10 approx
Denis C -  22.30 approx
Chris F -   23.56 approx .

Third Asics / Shoe Clinic  Hagley 5km Race  (Jan 22 )
Weather returned to pesky cold wind and sunny . Good turnout for all the runs (kids , regd. and fun-run ) .A few more CHA runners came out of the woodwork : Robert Holland , Andrew R/J and Laura Wood were three . Richie M donned his club singlet to record his fastest time of the series .

Matt D - 15.31 (2 SM /3rd O/All )
Andrew R/J- 17.33
Jacob R/ J  - 16.48 !
Chris D - 17. 40 !
Laura Wood  - 19.03 (3rd SW)
Natalie Dryden  - 19.43 !
John Gamblin - 18.49
Iain C- 20.35
Mike V - 20.57
Richie M - 18.24
Bella  B- 19.02 !
Greg B- 19. 28
Rob H -  21.26
Denis C -  22.20
Chris F -  23.45

Fourth Hagley 5 km race -Jan 29 th -
A potentially hot evening cooled slightly (no puns ) to give the usual windy conditions . The CHA runners in the fun run all posted fastest times for the series .Only a couple in the registered race had good runs .The Drydens had a car breakdown and didnt get a chance to warm up ,so their times suffered a bit. Robyn Perkins returned from holiday looking very fit and ran  strongly to go under 21 mins. Iain took the risk of no training for a week to heal an injury  , but ran as fast as usual. JohnGam and Andrew R/J advanced their times fractionally. I ran a hard 3000 on grass during the weekend and paid for it today .
Full results  :

Richie - 18.14  (" very happy ")
Bella   -  18.46 !
Greg  - 19.01 !
Rob H -  20.45 !
Denis -  21.48 !
Chris F  -  ?
Matt D - 16.05
Cam A -16.11
Chris D - 17.57
Nat D  -
Rich S -  17.02
Iain -  20. 24
Mike  -  21.13
John Gam - 18.43
Andrew   -  17.27
Jake R/J - 17. 13
Robyn -    20. 48 !

Fifth Hagley Race - Feb 4 (2013 ).Less said about this one the better .A light drizzle at 5 pm got heavier and the Sou' west wind driving it got so strong that tents and buntings were uprooted and plastic chairs turned over . Though it wasn't quite cold rain,  the windchill meant it was hyperthermic to lightly clad runners . Quite a few people chose to miss this race . Those who did run got slow times due to the head winds on exposed parts of the course . Matt had a very strong run for second placed SM . Iain, who hadn't trained properly for two weeks due to achilles problems, didn't need to race to hold third spot in his grade , but did and recorded his lifetime PW .Holding the race a day early to accommodate Classical sparks didnt suit me - not enough time to recover from long Sunday run, so I pulled out after 1 km .

Matt D -15.39 !
Cam A- 16.22
Rich S -  17.33
Chris D -  18.06
John Gamblin -19.34
Natalie D -  21.10
Iain C - 21. 51
Chris F- 23.25 ?

Here is a message from the organisers :

" Dear Competitors,
Thank you for your understanding of our inability to provide a proper presentation ceremony for you all last night in such dreadful weather. It was a disappointment for us all but particularly for those whose efforts during the Shoe Clinic Asics 5K Series 2013 were not publicly acknowledged by being pesented with their awards. Congratulations to all of those who earned awards and particularly to our Trophy winners who put up great times and competition.
Senior Men            1st and Senior Men's King of the Road Trophy              Rowan Hooper
Senior Women      1st and Senior Women's Queen of the Road Trophy      Angela Whyte
Men 35-44              1st and Veteran Men's King of the Road Trophy             Mark Bailey
Women 35-44         1st and Veteran Women's Queen of the Road Trophy    Fiona Gilroy
[No it's not a mistake! The 5K Series has trophies for Veterans, not Masters, as it has been going for thirty years, long before there were any Masters.]
And of course our thanks once again to all our sponsors and in particular our principal sponsors Shoe Clinic and Asics.
The Award vouchers as per the attachment are avaiable from the Shoe Clinic Shop at Westfield Plaza Riccarton Shop 120.
We will get the trophies engraved and have them available in a about a week. We will let the winners know exactly when they are finished and arrange for them to be delivered.
The full results for the Age Group Points Series is attached (not yet )
Once again our thanks to all of you for making 2013 another great Series and we look forward to seeing you back at the 2014 Series.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Jan 19th Iain and I drove down to Timaru to do some track running .We took Mike Bond from UNI club with us and we had a top day .Iain and Mike B went to do the M60 Steeplechase in the hope of snaring Canterbury titles . I agreed to enter a little 3000 m /5000 m event scheduled for 11.15 am , but really was there to cushion the petrol costs . There were a lot of CHA runners there and most of them were in red Canterbury rep singlets .The weather was overcast and muggy , but got hot whenever the sun broke out .
Iain and Mike ran the 2000 m along with the U19 Women .Iain aggravated a calf niggle after the first water jump and didn't enjoy the rest of his run ,  but gained the title. Mike Bond ran well only 14 seconds behind . I did the 3000m largely alone for speed practice (if you can call 12.47 'speed' ) .
Matt Dryden , though still 17 , opted for the Senior 3000m Steeple race and won it in impressive fashion. To record 10.08 over 3kms with seven water jumps and 28 hurdles is good going. He also showed ambidextrous jumping technique ie used left and right footed landings. Sean E, Angus B, Jacob R/J , Nat D ,Cam A and a few others were there doing multiple events. Part of the Programme required that they do a Long Jump. This caused a bit of fun for the boys as they hadn't jumped for "four years" .They said they could only manage 7 cm better than their PBs from back then . Height gain alone would account for that : )
Margot made a surprise appearance and she ran a 200m in 28 secs followed by a 1500 m in 4.42 .
Tannock went under 2 mins for 800m (1.58.8 )

Robyn tells of having been third Woman in the Hanmer Alpine Marathon on December 15 th , but her name doesn't appear in the official results .One can only surmise that Robyn arrived too late  to register and just jogged along with the crowd (but I couldn't possibly comment ) .

Stop Press : Iain was correct that the  Steeples set up for the 2000m races at Timaru last year were faulty . Iain's and Matt's times were affected . I can't understand the full intricacies of the irregularity , so please consult Iain who does .
ps - Iain has supplied this explanation : "The problem at Timaru in November was that we did 4 water jumps and 17 others, instead of 5 and 18 . Officials let us off the first two we should have done. The Track referee noticed during the race , but it was too late. Last month (January) they got it right , so Matt D would have done 7 water and 28 other jumps in his 3000m."

Did anyone see the great photo of Robyn in Christmas costume spotted training on Xmas day ? It was in the Press on Boxing Day ?

Good to see Margot do a 3000m on the track early in the New Year .A lot of the younger runners have been involved with exams but Margot clocked a fast 10.24 for the distance .
She went even faster in Wellington two weeks later doing 9 min 56 in the National Champs .

The Lance saga will 'spin' on for years now, but for a really interesting opinion look up what Nicole Cooke had to say on the eve of her retirement from the top of  English Women's cycling .

For those who want to do pole vault , there is now a fully equipped area available for Interclub at Pap Toc-H 's base at Papanui High .Contact Bill Boyd on 027 759 7807.

There seems to be a race to create the lightest shoes on earth.First it was trainers , then light trainers , then flats , then came the 'gorilla feet '  . Taking the foot-glove concept to it's limit are these :

They are promoted as simulating the feeling of bare feet - given how flimsy they look the line between simulation is getting blurred. The question of ventilation and blisters must be asked. Possibly a thin liner of cardboard would absorb moisture .You could probably make some of these more cheaply by dipping your feet in a tray of quik-set latex .

Two Ultra Marathon runners will be here on Jan 29th and looking for people to join them on the CHCH leg of their fundraising run .They will be doing five marathons in five days .Meet them in Hagley Park (where exactly ?)  at 8.30 am on Jan 29 .

With the hotter weather this recipe sent by Dave Holland is timely :
"Forget your expensive bottled sports drinks. Try this for a post-exercise re-hydration formula; Half a litre of water, half a litre of fresh orange juice, half a teaspoon of table salt and a slice of lemon. Put it in the fridge before you start and the thought of it will motivate you through your session."
I immediately made a batch and recommend adding a bit of honey and straining it to remove citrus fibres .Very refreshing .
