Sun 3 June saw a new course for the CHCH Marathon races .
I saw alot of the action from marshalling at the 10 km turnaround point on McLeans Island rd . The weather was unseasonably mild for early winter - a light Nor'west breeze in the morning completely died down by mid morning to leave the city in a bubble of warm air. A light Sou'West squall came through around midday which only affected the slower marathon runners .
Amongst the impressive sights were the visiting Kenyan runner leading the whole combined field at 6 km on his way to a 1.05 half marathon. He was an object lesson in style with an upright stance with a slight forward lean and legs just a blur . Sam Wreford and Dale Warrander were good to watch too as they led the marathon field with about 4 km to run. Sam had a good lead but Dale was running beautifully as well : his whole weight concentrated on the front of his feet and hitting the ground at the perfect angle and stride length. In the Half, Nicki McFadzien and Alex Williams were good models of female power. I didnt see Lisa H/Galvan or Gabrielle O'Rourke in the full marathon.
Runners from our club went quite well too. Matt Dryden was well up in the 10 km field  closely followed  by a much older Richard Seigne . Rodger and Greg B were in there too .Robyn went past on her way to another marathon PB .Perrin looked strong at 17 km in the Half. Paul Robinson looked cheerful, but admitted the wheels had fallen off at 15 km ( keep training Paul ) . Also seen were Chris F and Rob Archibald .Cam Avery may have run the Half too . Nice to see old Timaru friends Stu Bennett and Tony Robinson going strong .
Things were pretty busy at the turnaround .Our team of about eight had to keep eyes open for all the yellow numbers and filter them out of the hordes to get them across to the hairpin . Sandie did a great job on the megaphone .
Impatient motorists insisted on going as fast as usual up the car lane .Returning Half marathoners blended with the slow 10 km walkers making our area quite complex for a while .But there were  no mishaps, and Race Director Chris Cox hopped off the back of a big triumph motorbike to congratulate us on the job .
Early in the race a 10 km wheelchair athlete came through the turnaround ahead of the crowds , but somehow ripped the rubber belt off his drive wheel. He was having trouble getting it back in place and valuable seconds were ticking away .On impulse I ran across to help , but luckily Andrea was there to warn me not to, as he'd be DQ'd . Somewhere I already knew that, but emotions override the brain .
RESULTS.
Some standout runs were (in no particular order):

1- Andrew Reese /Jones (who kept his marathon intentions quiet ) clocked 2.44.16 (p.b ) to get 1st placed 40 year old AND reversed last year's result with Lisa Hunter-Galvan .

2-  Robyn Perkins who advanced her marathon P.B to 3.27.46 , obtaining 3 rd placed Vet 40-49 woman.

3-  Matt Dryden ran 33.16 in the 10 km, for first placed M18 (7 th overall ) .

4- Laura Wood looked great in club colors on her way to a 38.15  10 km time (3rd placed S/Woman ).

5-Cameron Avery clocked 1.22.49 in the Half and gained 3 rd placed U19 Male.

6-Jacob Reese/Jones ran 36.23 in the 10 km for 4 th placed M18.

7-Richard Seigne - 35.44 in the 10 km

8-Courteney Ruske - 53.52 mins  for 10 km walk -1 st place overall.

other results were :

Sue Davis -50.48 for 10 km (assuming this was CHCH Avon's Sue D )
Lorraine Wilson -1.00.28 for 10 km.
Harry Seigne  -48.49 for 10 km.
Gary Prest   - 51.00 for 10 km.
Anna Reese /Jones - 47.14 for 10 km .
Rodger Ward - 40.52 for 10 km .
Greg Bramwell -40.52 for 10 km .
Bella Bramwell -41.09  for 10 km .

Perrin Richardson - 1.19 in the Half ?
Alex Manton -1.35.04 in the Half.
Paul Robinson - 1.51.40 in the Half.
Richard Swan (ex CHA  ) - 1.11.45  !  in the Half .
Lutz Beckert - 1.49.09  in the Half.
Rob Archibald - 1.58.09 in the Half.
Chris Florkowski - 1.49.18 in the Half.

Nutrition is a subject that's important to everyone and athletes especially .To some extent being a runner insulates you from poor eating habits . This lecture (blue link below) supports that view; but if you watch it you will want to make some changes to your eating habits anyway I think . It is 90 minutes long , a bit technical in places , but extremely compelling once underway. It explains USA's obesity explosion - which is being exported to the rest of the world .

I recently wrote somewhat unenthusiastically about the National Body governing our sport ,and just to shame me they sent out one of their infrequent mailings . Included was a nice little memorial booklet chronicling 150 years of athletics in New Zealand . I'll leave this in the clubrooms for all to look at .I learned a few interesting things from it eg New Zealand athletes preceded the All Blacks in the use of black singlets and silver ferns by about two years .Bio's of early sportspersons and administrators also there.
Also in the send- out was an agenda for the national AGM, which hints at some directions to clubs on new ways to generate income . We await these with interest.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Holloway Cross Country is this Saturday 9th June. Only 8 CHA runners have entered this one . No wonder, as it's the race that everyone likes to give a swerve .It is a COTY points race so hopefully the 38 juniors will boost our chances .
Slightly too late to enter this , but if you desperately want to run I'll see what I can do.
This event is now cancelled due to snow drifts on the course

The Politics and Controversies of the Modern Olympics – Greg Ryan
Starts 11 June, 7-9pm, 2 Mondays,
at the Canterbury WEA, 59 Glouester Street, (Workers' Educational Association)
All welcome! Cost $16
The International Olympic Committee insists that London 2012, will be a celebration of sporting participation and success. In reality, the modern Olympic games, have always been highly political and marked by controversy. They were used by Hitler to promote Nazi Germany; became an important staging ground for the Cold War; almost bankrupted a number of cities that hosted them; have been tainted by drug scandals and influenced by television and corporate sponsorship. Yet there have also been many extraordinary sporting performances and millions continue to watch. Greg Ryan is Associate Professor in History and Dean of the Faculty of Environment, Society and Design at Lincoln University.
For further information or to enrol for this course, please phone 366 0285, email: admin@cwea.org.nz  or see: cwea.org.nz

"Hi Canterbury athletes,

This is to advise you of what is happening regarding sending Canterbury teams to National Cross Country & Road Champs this year.
We are very keen to have the strongest possible team in all grades at Nationals, so please consider going.
The XC & R Committee has a special focus of encouraging the 13 to 23 age group to stay in the sport by being fully involved in it.
Therefore we are especially keen to see this age group going to Nationals, whether you are selected in the Canterbury Team or not.

National Cross Country Championships are in Hamilton on August 4th.
There is a  nomination form and you will also be able to find it on the Canterbury website soon.
We have appointed Mike Riley as Team Manager. Mike will be helped by Assistant Team Managers Leaanne O’Sullivan and Dave King.
You have the option of flying straight into Hamilton or via Auckland on Friday/Sunday as fares in and out of there are much cheaper.
The XC & R Committee will provide minivan transport between Auckland and Hamilton and return for a one off cost of $30 per person.
You must book and pay for your own airline tickets, so buying them now can cost you as little as $69 each way.
Flights into and out of Hamilton currently start at $149 each way.
Please take note of the additional information on the nomination form regarding when you should fly into and out of Auckland.
The XC & R Committee will subsidise flight costs of anybody selected in the Canterbury Team who competes, up to a maximum of $150.
We will also consider subsidies to Grade 23 and down athletes who don’t make the team but would benefit from attending Nationals.
We hope you stay in Hamilton with the team on the Saturday night as a team meal is always organised.
Our Secretary Bernadette Jago is currently exploring accommodation options in Hamilton.

National Road Championships are in Wellington on September 1st, using much the same course as last year.
Pat Boland and Peter King have been appointed Team, Managers for this event.
As above, you need to book and pay for your own flights to and from Wellington.
The  cheapest flights currently listed are $69 & $79 each way.
We will pay flight subsidies as for National Cross Country.
We will organise and pay for a free minivan to do airport pickups and drop offs.
Accommodation close to the event is currently being booked.

Please note that we do not take or subsidise athletes who are competing in the G14 and G12 individual championships.
Should they wish to attend either Championship, then it is the parents responsibility to organise, take and care for them.
To be eligible to compete in the Grade 16 events, you must be 13 on the 31 of December 2012. (ANZ By-Law C3.2)

If you are not a NZ Citizen or a Permanent Resident of NZ, then there will be issues with you being selected for the Canterbury Team.
Please let us know early if you are in this situation, especially if you are asking us to enter you.

As always, check the ANZ and Athletics Canterbury websites for up to date information.
The Road Champs nomination form will be uploaded soon. http://www.athletics.org.nz/CANTERBURY/Article.aspx?ID=890

Please feel free to email me back to tell me you are keen to go, as we would appreciate having some idea of numbers we need to cater for.
Likewise, please contact me if you need any clarification.

Cheers"
John Gamblin
Chairman
Cross Country & Road Committee

"Hi All Chav members,

My daughter -Fiona -belonged to the Chav Junior club from 5-14yrs and for the last 6 years has been one of our Senior club coaches on Monday nights.

She also runs the gym sessions for our Seniors in the Winter months.

Fiona has been selected to go on an Athletics Development tour of Europe at the end of the month.

She is privileged to be 1 out of only 12 NZ athletes chosen and will be training and competing in 100m hurdles and 100m at meetings in Belgium, Germany, France and Wales over a period of 1 month.

She has received some funding from Athletics NZ -but has to find the other $5000 + herself.

She is running a raffle over the next 3 weeks.

Having approached several firms for help - the Nivea and Elastoplast  company have provided her with 3 gift hampers full of their products to raffle.

The baskets are full of both ladies/men's Nivea and Elastoplast products (including strapping tape -great for athletes!!) .

They are  worth _ 1st Prize $200,  2nd Prize $100 and 3rd Prize $50.

Raffle tickets cost $2 each or 3 for $5 and she hopes to sell a many as possible to help with the cost of her trip.

Being winter means that I don't see as many of our Chav families as usual -but if any of you would like to support Fiona by buying a few tickets -

I have them here at home (20 Tyndale Place, Ilam) or will have them at the Russley gym on Tuesday night  -6.30pm (apologies to gym members who have already had an email ).

Otherwise -if you want to direct credit an amount into Fiona's account -let me know and I will send you the details and then allocate you some ticket numbers.

Fiona (and I ) will be very appreciative of any support you can give :)

Regards,

Marilyn"
