June 10 Update

Here's a message for the younger runners ( ages12 to 23 )

"We have now finalised the teenage runs for this season .....
– remember these are social runs being run so you can mix with other teenage runners in a non-competitive situation; they should be fun so don’t worry if you aren’t that fast as we will cater for you as well as our elite runners.

The dates & clubs hosting the events are listed below.

All runs are on Sundays and start time is 9am.

The first run is a couple of weeks away and will start at the Victoria Park main car park. Marty Lukes will be there to take the elite runners. Marty is the New Zealand 100km champion but he has promised you will not be going that far on the 24th. In fact runners will be running for 45 to 70 minutes depending on capability.

A simple breakfast will be provided at the end of the runs and we should be all finished by 10:30am ready for your parents to pick you up if needed.

As Victoria Park can get a bit cool please make sure you bring some thermals with you; it can be warm in the city but cool on the tops so please come prepared.

See you on the 24th – if you have any questions please touch base with me at the Anglican Block relay on the 23rd. I will be near the Sumner tent.

Cheers"

The snow damaged the big tree above our clubrooms .A few heavy branches crashed onto the aluminium roof and the plastic guttering around the balcony area . The guttering was ripped away and  a downpipe broken .Those branches drop leaves in autumn which block the guttering so it will be no loss to see them chopped away . The clubrooms have taken a hammering with water damage in 2006 (?) and a costly overhaul of the sewerage pumps recently too (no comments : )

Remember the new date for the AGM is 28 th June in the Clubrooms at the new time of 7 pm .See larger notice in previous post for more details .

Happy ?0 th Birthday to Jane P - it's only psychological !
Greg B hit the big Five -0  this year too?

It's not often a Center race gets cancelled due to bad weather - one of the mantras of athletics is "we dont stop for bad weather "* - but the Holloway was canned on Saturday . Heavy snow during the week and record cold daytime temps meant that the course was under half a meter of snow, with no hope of a melt by race day .
* I'm sure you all trained anyway .

Readers may recall that this blog is getting an average of fifty views per posting . A couple have gone as high as eighty .But a closer look at blog stats reveals that a percentage of views come from spyware sites from all around the world .Not sure what they find out by scanning us but their traffic is sometimes as high as 20 % of hits and originates from as far afield as Alaska , mainland USA and South East Asia   .

Remember to support The Shoe Clinic for all your training and racing needs .
We have been posting  color features from the Clinic with  all the good deals on offer , but the blog has occasional problems with  pdf attachments .The special arrangement our members have  still applies , so check out the stores .

Nutrition is a subject that's important to everyone and athletes especially .To some extent being a runner insulates you from poor eating habits . This lecture (blue link below) supports that view; but if you watch it you will want to make some changes to your eating habits anyway I think . It is 90 minutes long , a bit technical in places , but extremely compelling once underway. It explains USA's obesity explosion - which is being exported to the rest of the world .
ps-  events have overtaken this somewhat with a current affairs item referencing it .The idiotic phenomenon of people having water delivered to their homes has succeeded bottled water in supermarkets . What next? air will be sold in take-home bottles within five years .

" The South Canterbury Harrier Management Committee are this year trying to revive interest in their Round the Gorges Relay.  The numbers of teams in the last few years has been dropping away and following last year’s event, they proposed to run  5 lap relay in conjunction with their 8 lap event.  The Athletics Cross Country and Road Committee recommended that they convert fully to a 5 lap relay and concentrate all their efforts in the one event.  This information on this year’s event is a consequence of those discussions.  We hope that all Canterbury Clubs will give this their full support as even the smaller clubs should be able to field a 5 person team and hopefully more teams."
(msg from Ath Canty)
Note - this event will be on Aug 25th and it would be nice for CHCH Avon to send two teams of five .

"Hi Canterbury athletes,

This is to advise you of what is happening regarding sending Canterbury teams to National Cross Country & Road Champs this year.
We are very keen to have the strongest possible team in all grades at Nationals, so please consider going.
The XC & R Committee has a special focus of encouraging the 13 to 23 age group to stay in the sport by being fully involved in it.
Therefore we are especially keen to see this age group going to Nationals, whether you are selected in the Canterbury Team or not.

National Cross Country Championships are in Hamilton on August 4th.
There is a  nomination form and you will also be able to find it on the Canterbury website soon.
We have appointed Mike Riley as Team Manager. Mike will be helped by Assistant Team Managers Leaanne O’Sullivan and Dave King.
You have the option of flying straight into Hamilton or via Auckland on Friday/Sunday as fares in and out of there are much cheaper.
The XC & R Committee will provide minivan transport between Auckland and Hamilton and return for a one off cost of $30 per person.
You must book and pay for your own airline tickets, so buying them now can cost you as little as $69 each way.
Flights into and out of Hamilton currently start at $149 each way.
Please take note of the additional information on the nomination form regarding when you should fly into and out of Auckland.
The XC & R Committee will subsidise flight costs of anybody selected in the Canterbury Team who competes, up to a maximum of $150.
We will also consider subsidies to Grade 23 and down athletes who don’t make the team but would benefit from attending Nationals.
We hope you stay in Hamilton with the team on the Saturday night as a team meal is always organised.
Our Secretary Bernadette Jago is currently exploring accommodation options in Hamilton.

National Road Championships are in Wellington on September 1st, using much the same course as last year.
Pat Boland and Peter King have been appointed Team, Managers for this event.
As above, you need to book and pay for your own flights to and from Wellington.
The  cheapest flights currently listed are $69 & $79 each way.
We will pay flight subsidies as for National Cross Country.
We will organise and pay for a free minivan to do airport pickups and drop offs.
Accommodation close to the event is currently being booked.

Please note that we do not take or subsidise athletes who are competing in the G14 and G12 individual championships.
Should they wish to attend either Championship, then it is the parents responsibility to organise, take and care for them.
To be eligible to compete in the Grade 16 events, you must be 13 on the 31 of December 2012. (ANZ By-Law C3.2)

If you are not a NZ Citizen or a Permanent Resident of NZ, then there will be issues with you being selected for the Canterbury Team.
Please let us know early if you are in this situation, especially if you are asking us to enter you.

As always, check the ANZ and Athletics Canterbury websites for up to date information.
The Road Champs nomination form will be uploaded soon. http://www.athletics.org.nz/CANTERBURY/Article.aspx?ID=890

Please feel free to email me back to tell me you are keen to go, as we would appreciate having some idea of numbers we need to cater for.
Likewise, please contact me if you need any clarification.

Cheers"

"Hi All Chav members,

My daughter -Fiona -belonged to the Chav Junior club from 5-14yrs and for the last 6 years has been one of our Senior club coaches on Monday nights.

She also runs the gym sessions for our Seniors in the Winter months.

Fiona has been selected to go on an Athletics Development tour of Europe at the end of the month.

She is privileged to be 1 out of only 12 NZ athletes chosen and will be training and competing in 100m hurdles and 100m at meetings in Belgium, Germany, France and Wales over a period of 1 month.

She has received some funding from Athletics NZ -but has to find the other $5000 + herself.

She is running a raffle over the next 3 weeks.

Having approached several firms for help - the Nivea and Elastoplast  company have provided her with 3 gift hampers full of their products to raffle.

The baskets are full of both ladies/men's Nivea and Elastoplast products (including strapping tape -great for athletes!!) .

They are  worth _ 1st Prize $200,  2nd Prize $100 and 3rd Prize $50.

Raffle tickets cost $2 each or 3 for $5 and she hopes to sell a many as possible to help with the cost of her trip.

Being winter means that I don't see as many of our Chav families as usual -but if any of you would like to support Fiona by buying a few tickets -

I have them here at home (20 Tyndale Place, Ilam) or will have them at the Russley gym on Tuesday night  -6.30pm (apologies to gym members who have already had an email ).

Otherwise -if you want to direct credit an amount into Fiona's account -let me know and I will send you the details and then allocate you some ticket numbers.

Fiona (and I ) will be very appreciative of any support you can give :)

Regards,

Marilyn"
