May 26 th update

A cool drafty sort of day for the Club Champs held at Lake Rotokohatu at 2.30 pm on Saturday 26 th
May . But at least the the grass was dry after weeks of no rain , which let a lot of people wear unspiked shoes .Normally the fast downhill sections would be slippery with mud at this stage of the season .
The set-up team arrived at 12.30 and had it all ready to go in about an hour. Having ten people on board makes the job go so much quicker and more enjoyably. The council also did a great job of mowing the whole paddock as well as the actual course. A bit of grass raking and the surface was getting close to golf course quality . But that is not to say it wasn't testing .There were two nuggetty climbs per 2km lap (and two good descents ). The rest was undulating . A wheel was run over the course to accredit it as 2 km and  a few corners were widened to create an extra 70 m. Garmin checks later (courtesy of Richard) showed the 8 kms to be closer to 8.2 km . The layout had the feel of a big national event ; and with some development it could certainly be pressed into that use.
The Children's fields were well represented but the seniors and vets were rather down . Several category winners had 'easy' wins , though they all ran hard anyway . Matt , Margot and Jane were fairly untroubled champions .Andrew R/J had to fight for the Vet Mens title from an untrained  Rich Seigne with Anthony in the mix too .The Rogal brothers already had their adrenaline levels up after helping the police nab a burglar who was using their property to elude capture in the morning .
Looking at these results it can be seen how few of us ran . Margot ran unopposed .Alex won the Senior Mens  race almost unopposed ( only Greg behind him ) .Congratulations to Matt Dryden who ran fastest time of the day as a 17 year old (I'm not sure if he takes the Senior title as well as the M 17 ? ?) . Rodger had a great run .Victor started to show his old class with a strong final lap. Evans Chileshe unleashed a cannonball finish on me (but I dont think he is a vet ) . Sandie is doing well,  but said Anne had the better of her today. Jane said she is finding the short races a bit more tiring as she approaches a new grade ; but she was a convincing winner over an improving Robyn Perkins.  Robyn would have gone closer if she hadnt stopped to tie a shoelace .
A good number met at the Harewood tavern afterwards .It was good they let  children and teens  sit at the tables .It's a nice atmosphere in there, but pretty noisy if you want hear what people are saying  .I.C has a trick of pitching his voice to sit right inside the prevailing frequency of the room , and when you lean closer to hear better , he just lowers the volume.  I just about fell over to be charged $19 for a jug of Macs Gold and a bowl of chips . didnt finish the beer and Chris Dryden ate most of the chips !

Also scheduled on Saturday 26th was the Rawhiti Road Races , and three CHCH Avon runners were spotted in the results for the 5 km road race .Laura Wood , being a triathlete , probably found a road race more beneficial to her than a  6 km XC run .Had she turned up at the lake she might have won a club title, because her time of 18.30 over 5000m showed she is in good form. This netted her 2nd place in a good Womens field .
Chris  also opted for the 5 km and recorded 22.49.
Perrin's name is in the results ,but no time is recorded ,so maybe he had a mishap (we'd love to hear about it Perrin ! )

The Politics and Controversies of the Modern Olympics – Greg Ryan
Starts 11 June, 7-9pm, 2 Mondays,
at the Canterbury WEA, 59 Glouester Street, (Workers' Educational Association)
All welcome! Cost $16
The International Olympic Committee insists that London 2012, will be a celebration of sporting participation and success. In reality, the modern Olympic games, have always been highly political and marked by controversy. They were used by Hitler to promote Nazi Germany; became an important staging ground for the Cold War; almost bankrupted a number of cities that hosted them; have been tainted by drug scandals and influenced by television and corporate sponsorship. Yet there have also been many extraordinary sporting performances and millions continue to watch. Greg Ryan is Associate Professor in History and Dean of the Faculty of Environment, Society and Design at Lincoln University.

"Hi Canterbury athletes,

I am emailing you to advise you off what is happening regarding sending Canterbury teams to National Cross Country & Road Champs this year.
We are very keen to have the strongest possible team in all grades at Nationals, so please consider going.
The XC & R Committee has a special focus of encouraging the 13 to 23 age group to stay in the sport by being fully involved in it.
Therefore we are especially keen to see this age group going to Nationals, whether you are selected in the Canterbury Team or not.

National Cross Country Championships are in Hamilton on August 4th.
There is a  nomination form and you will also be able to find it on the Canterbury website soon.
We have appointed Mike Riley as Team Manager. Mike will be helped by Assistant Team Managers Leaanne O’Sullivan and Dave King.
You have the option of flying straight into Hamilton or via Auckland on Friday/Sunday as fares in and out of there are much cheaper.
The XC & R Committee will provide minivan transport between Auckland and Hamilton and return for a one off cost of $30 per person.
You must book and pay for your own airline tickets, so buying them now can cost you as little as $69 each way.
Flights into and out of Hamilton currently start at $149 each way.
Please take note of the additional information on the nomination form regarding when you should fly into and out of Auckland.
The XC & R Committee will subsidise flight costs of anybody selected in the Canterbury Team who competes, up to a maximum of $150.
We will also consider subsidies to Grade 23 and down athletes who don’t make the team but would benefit from attending Nationals.
We hope you stay in Hamilton with the team on the Saturday night as a team meal is always organised.
Our Secretary Bernadette Jago is currently exploring accommodation options in Hamilton.

National Road Championships are in Wellington on September 1st, using much the same course as last year.
Pat Boland and Peter King have been appointed Team, Managers for this event.
As above, you need to book and pay for your own flights to and from Wellington.
The  cheapest flights currently listed are $69 & $79 each way.
We will pay flight subsidies as for National Cross Country.
We will organise and pay for a free minivan to do airport pickups and drop offs.
Accommodation close to the event is currently being booked.

Please note that we do not take or subsidise athletes who are competing in the G14 and G12 individual championships.
Should they wish to attend either Championship, then it is the parents responsibility to organise, take and care for them.
To be eligible to compete in the Grade 16 events, you must be 13 on the 31 of December 2012. (ANZ By-Law C3.2)

If you are not a NZ Citizen or a Permanent Resident of NZ, then there will be issues with you being selected for the Canterbury Team.
Please let us know early if you are in this situation, especially if you are asking us to enter you.

As always, check the ANZ and Athletics Canterbury websites for up to date information.
The Road Champs nomination form will be uploaded soon. http://www.athletics.org.nz/CANTERBURY/Article.aspx?ID=890

Please feel free to email me back to tell me you are keen to go, as we would appreciate having some idea of numbers we need to cater for.
Likewise, please contact me if you need any clarification.

Cheers"

Cross Country & Road Committee

"Hi All Chav members,

My daughter -Fiona -belonged to the Chav Junior club from 5-14yrs and for the last 6 years has been one of our Senior club coaches on Monday nights.

She also runs the gym sessions for our Seniors in the Winter months.

Fiona has been selected to go on an Athletics Development tour of Europe at the end of the month.

She is privileged to be 1 out of only 12 NZ athletes chosen and will be training and competing in 100m hurdles and 100m at meetings in Belgium, Germany, France and Wales over a period of 1 month.

She has received some funding from Athletics NZ -but has to find the other $5000 + herself.

She is running a raffle over the next 3 weeks.

Having approached several firms for help - the Nivea and Elastoplast  company have provided her with 3 gift hampers full of their products to raffle.

The baskets are full of both ladies/men's Nivea and Elastoplast products (including strapping tape -great for athletes!!) .

They are  worth _ 1st Prize $200,  2nd Prize $100 and 3rd Prize $50.

Raffle tickets cost $2 each or 3 for $5 and she hopes to sell a many as possible to help with the cost of her trip.

Being winter means that I don't see as many of our Chav families as usual -but if any of you would like to support Fiona by buying a few tickets -

I have them here at home (20 Tyndale Place, Ilam) or will have them at the Russley gym on Tuesday night  -6.30pm (apologies to gym members who have already had an email ).

Otherwise -if you want to direct credit an amount into Fiona's account -let me know and I will send you the details and then allocate you some ticket numbers.

Fiona (and I ) will be very appreciative of any support you can give :)

Regards,

Marilyn"
