Five from CHCH Avon went down to Ashburton for the Easter Hop races on Sat April 7 .
Perfect sunny warm weather for the race and after- function .A bit of wind on the outward leg, but a nice assisting breeze all the way down Racecourse Rd.
Prizegiving has been lucky to have perfect weather to be held outdoors over the last 3 years . Not alot of performance prizes beyond first place in the various categories , but lots of spot prizes . No times were announced for the various placegetters which is a bit perplexing (it would be good to know how well these people ran ).
Iain and I drew clothing spot prizes .Amazingly, almost all eight members of the Methodist contingent got spot prizes .
Water stations at 4 km and 8 km were well stocked with cups .Easter eggs handed out at finish . The usual excellent system of recording results was in place .
The course was yet again renewed this year to almost totally keep the runners off the main road heading west .Various back streets were used . Marshalling was pretty good with friendly people in safety vests at all corners .One corner was manned by someone who didn't indicate whether we had to run right past him or just cut the corner . By the second lap we cut the corner. A couple of the little bends near the hotel were capable of being cut and a lot of people did .
No idea how accurate the distance was but fastest woman (Alex Williams) did 57 mins !
Fastest male was Dave Ridley in 53 mins.
Iain Chinnery and I ran ' together' * for 8 miles until Iain's superior training let him open a lead down Racecourse rd. Iain got 69.12 (second V60 to Peter Larkin ) and I did 69.35 (4th V 50 )
Denis ran solidly for about 71.30 .
Courteney Ruske cleaned up the 5 mile walk . John Hinton also walked .

Iain asks that anyone entering the Wellington Half Marathon in June consider filling in the Teams section . It wont cost any extra and will give the Club a chance at the teams title. Just write 'Christchurch Avon ' . Iain says he knows three of us will be up there , so that only requires one more to form a team.

Those intending to run the Olympic Rossendale 15 km in early May , please note that the venue given in the 2012 Programme is incorrect. The race will be held at Greenpark NOT Greendale . Apologies to Dave Catherwood who was looking forward to watching the racing around his old family farm .

Club Captain Rodger Ward is starting a regular Wednesday evening run : 5.45 pm from under the clocktower in the car park of the Harewood Tavern.
It will start Wednesday, April 4 and carry on all year if numbers build .
envisage the format to be a casual jog down to Nunweek Park, a couple of easy laps, jog back and
maybe a beer.
Later on in the season we would look at doing some intervals, fartlek (speedplay) or drills.
Regards,
Rodger
Try to support this as often as your schedule and other commitments allow.

Various Secondary school T&F Champs are being held about now. Not all results have been released .They will be here soon...
OTHER RESULTS - SOUTH ISLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL ATHLETICS - NELSON
Craig writes :
" Whilst we were busy hunting and demolishing chocolate treats, many of our older Juniors were in Nelson representing their schools at the South Island Athletics Champs. CHAV club members had an outstanding weekend collecting a total of 8 GOLD, 14 SILVER and 9 BRONZE medals between them. A WHOPPING 31 medals compared to the 13 we reported this time last year. WELL DONE to all who competed, there are too many great results to list them all here - full results are available on line - but special mention must go to;
Sean Eustace who set a new record in winning the U15 Boys 3000m with a time of 9:09.93.
Tannock Blair who would have set a new record in the U16 Boys 1500m (running faster than the old recrod), but was pipped into second place.
Courtney Ruske who in a brave solo effort missed the record in the Open Girls 2000m Race Walk by just 1 sec. Many people would find it hard to run 2km in 9:30 and Courtney was nearly 4 minutes ahead of second place.
