Iain popped down to Timaru for South Island Masters meet on Sat 3 Dec. He ran a peppy 400 meters.
here is his short report .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"MikeA lovely day in Timaru - warm to hot with almost no wind. Andrew Stark did about 4:16 for 1500 and 2:04 for 800 and showed he was in a different class to anyone else there.400m: I was reminded why I do not do sprints! I was in the outside lane, so started in front, but approaching, and through, the second bend, while I was going as fast as I could, the others started passing me on the inside. I finished last (4th out of 4 in M60, with a couple of younger runners there too) in 70.82, which is a PB! Michael Bond looked good winning the next race with all the really old ones and did about 75 secs.Steeplechase: only 3 starters.M75 Bill Kenny; M65 Michael Bond; M60 me.. I was in the lead from start to finish and never felt under pressure (apart from the pressure not to fall over), so I was happy with 8:37.83 (my previous 2 efforts were 8:32 and 8:40). Michael finished about 30 seconds behind me and I lapped Bill."
James R says he will be leaving Christchurch on Nov 27th to begin living in Nelson for a while . He says he will probably make visits back here but will be unavailable to run for the club next year. This will weaken the CHCH Avon veteran ranks even though he is known as "one of the laziest trainers around " - in fact James himself has claimed to be ' the' laziest trainer around.
We will miss his sense of humor and generosity . James recently won over $100 worth of spot prizes in the Frontrunner races and immediately gifted them to friends and family .
Stop Press: Spoke too soon - James is still in CHCH as he hasn't found a house in Nelson yet

irun list of favorite running quotes .
Some of them will resonate with you , but others seem like 70's running boom hype and others are downright insane (imho). One that isn't there but which I've always remembered from the day I heard him say it, is from John Hellemens (a medical M.D and world ranked triathlete ) .
He said : "If you cannot find time to exercise you will have to find time for illness ".
Another one I like is : "Training is cheating ".
and "If you keep turning up to races you'll eventually win something "~JG of ChCh Avon .
and "most people run their easy days too hard and their hard days too easy " ~JP of ChCh Avon .
and "Every second counts " ~ VG of ChCh Avon.
Tom Birnie never had a serious injury in a long and successful career. He once said :
"If you feel a niggle coming on , just back off a little ".
Scott Bridgman said "calves : easy to hurt , hard to fix "
I'm a bit opposed to the school of thought that says "never give in " or "never pull out " or "it's better to crawl across the finish line than be carried "etc . My philosophy is that if you weren't fit enough or properly prepared for an event , you shouldn't have started in it .And if you did start in a good humoured way hoping to fluke it but got caught out , well there's no shame in withdrawing and sparing yourself an injury at worst , and an off -putting experience at best .
Of course if you are fit for an event and want to do well in it , there is a place for gutbusting heroics- if you feel the reward is worthy (and this is entirely subjective to the athlete concerned ) .Finish line battles between top athletes who are fit are rarely damaging to them , but give onlookers memorable spectacles of human endurance .Of course if you are very talented and your training is going well , you can win without strain , which is a fine position to be in . Jacques Anquetil was so superior during the 50's that he often had time to comb his hair and tidy up before crossing the line in Tour de France stages .
As regards training , if you have been a couch potato for years and decide to suddenly get fit , there is no sense in launching into a program beyond your abilities . It is senseless to blame your will power for what your body simply cannot produce . Gradual increase and load progression combined with sensible diet , rest and recovery is the best way . Realistic appraisal of your body type is important too. The best runners are usually slender and always underweight by common standards and generally have long femur -to- trunk ratios .But there are plenty of good runners who dont fit this mould who optimise their potential through intelligent attention to as many aspects of the sport they can.
"If you miss one day's training , you notice it ; miss two days and everyone does"(GV)
