Track day on Saturday 12 th was cancelled due to rain. CHCH Avon was listed as a duty club so I went down to Burnside just in case . There was no-one there other than Matt and Nat Dryden , who did a 1500 m time trial in the rain (Matt 4 .48 )
Track will be at Burnside again this Saturday and the Canty Champs 10,000 m is on the program at 4.45 pm .Entries must be received by 3.45 pm at the club buildings. This is very early this year and may have been missed by people .

James R says he will be leaving Christchurch on Nov 27th to begin living in Nelson for a while . He says he will probably make visits back here but will be unavailable to run for the club next year. This will weaken the CHCH Avon veteran ranks even though he is known as "one of the laziest trainers around " - in fact James himself has claimed to be ' the' laziest trainer around.
We will miss his sense of humor and generosity . James recently won over $100 worth of spot prizes in the Frontrunner races and immediately gifted them to friends and family .

Rodger Ward completed the New York Marathon last week.
It was exciting to follow his early splits : 43.30 at 10 kms and 1.33 at half way. But, as so often happens in marathons, the second half is what determines the final time: 3 hours 42 in this case . Nice to see NZ's Kimberley Smith have a good run there (2 hrs 25 ) .
John Ingles was also stateside for this event , but a recent form slump meant he didn't start.
The Tai Tapu Half Marathon and related 10 km run and walks , was held on Sunday 6th Nov. Conditions were perfect early in the morning for what became a hot day . Richard Seigne was only 4 mins behind the Open winner with a 1.19.52. He earned first placed V45 , and hopefully got a good prize .
Sue Davis just sneaked under the 2 hour mark and won fastest VW 50 placing .Well done Sue .Training mate Sue Johnson carded a DNF , so maybe she's been over -racing after Bell Hill ?
Robyn Perkins had a good run in 1.42.39 , which netted her 1st placed VW 45 .Things look good for her long Queen Charlotte race soon (race report elsewhere onsite)
Another 1st place went to John Hinton who contested the 10 km walk in 1 hour 27.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a message from Jane P who obviously had one of those exceptional races on Sunday.
" Just to let you know I did the Lake Hood half marathon on Sunday (6 th nov ). Tricky course as it is very stony underfoot most of the way and was very hot. I came second overall (yes out of men and women and in all age groups). Time of 1:33:42. Well pleased as it was my first half for a long while and since my injury."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Going back to October 23 , Andrew R/J and son went down to Twizel for the 19.2 km Pyramid run .Andrew had a very good day with 3 rd place (1st vet) in 1 hr 17.02
(only two mins off the winning pace ) .
Jacob was 1st placed 12-14 yr old in 1 hr 30 mins .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had a thought provoking experience the other day . Running down Grassmere St around 5 pm and a guy in a truck called out "what do you run for ?" . It was a narrow road so I crossed over to hear him better .
"What do you go running for ?"he repeated .
"I like it "I said .
"But where are you going? ... you're ruining your joints "
"I'm just going a few kms up the road "I told him.
"But you're going to have to come all the way back..you're going to ruin your joints "
I assured him my joints were alright .
He was a fencing contractor I think, well -fed looking, a hard worker and friendly enough.
He eventually said "I can't understand it ", shook his head and drove on .
Well, it got me thinking why I do run ? I think the initial answer was true : I do like it . All I know is whenever I have to stop running for some reason , I always gravitate back to it . Sometimes I wonder if it's a selfish activity .Well probably yes, but other people have pastimes that block out big parts of their spare time too. There's also the competition side and a social component .Being in a club is a good community activity. In moderation it's healthy, and it keeps the physios busy : )

concentrated and dark is hard on the kidneys and means you need to drink.
Interestingly , long swims in chlorinated pools cause totally clear urine .Why ?

Race 1 of the current Sumner Off Road series was raced this evening (Wed 16 ) . There are two to go, so try to get out to the Quarry and do one of them .
results Race 1
Rich Seigne was at his usual best with a 4 th place overall and first Vet (ahead of Marty Lukes !)
Race 2 - had only 38 competitors due to cold rainy conditions .Richard Seigne couldn't make it as he was 'on call '.There were no other CHCHAvon runners there .

6th annual Christchurch Self-Transcendence 100km, 50km, 25km and 10km races, and 100km teams event to be held on Sunday 11th December.
We are pleased to announce that this year's race incorporates the Athletics New Zealand National 100km Championships.
Once again our race will be held in the beautiful Hagley Park, on a well shaded 2km loop specifically chosen to provide close supervision and care for all runners.
We provide:
- A comprehensive aid station offers nourishing meals, snacks, and drinks to sustain runners throughout the day.
- On hand medical support.
- A dedicated team who will be counting laps for all those running the 50k and 100k distances.
- Trophies and medals will be offered to all place getters in the 100km and 50km events.
This event has a 13 hour cut off, starting at 6.30am for the 100km and later in the morning for the other races. We conclude with a prize giving ceremony and a post race meal for all runners and supporters. Last year we had 11 finishers in the 100km, our first finisher being Sukhajata Cranfield of Christchurch who completed the distance in a personal best time of 8.47.55.
This is a wonderful and exciting event to be a part of, and a great opportunity to witness first hand people really pushing their own boundaries and exploring their own potential. Although not everyone has the capacity to do the full 100km's, running a shorter distance or being part of a team is a great way to be involved.
Teams: can contain a maximum of four people. Each team member must run for a minimum of one hour at a time. We welcome corporate teams, as well as gyms and sports clubs. If you would like to run as part of a team, but cannot make up the numbers, please contact us and we will do our very best to put you in touch with others to match you.
More information about this event, including the prices for each race, is available on our website. We encourage you to visit nz.srichinmoyraces.org. If you would like to read more about ultra running, including an interview with Vajin Armstrong, NZ representative at the Ultra trail running Commonwealth championships and winner of the 2011 Kepler Challenge, please visit www.ultrarunning.co.nz.
