First up, let's congratulate two of our runners who were awarded Merit badges at the recent AGM.These are not issued often or lightly .The club has prescribed achievement criteria as set out in the Constitution.
Margot Gibson's fine win in the 2010 World Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs was an indisputable case .Congratulations from your club Margot.
John Gamblin was already on the Merit board for past deeds , so he earned a merit bar for his win in the Canterbury Steeplechase Champs (2010) . In his acceptance speech John said he had been trying to nab this title for many years and had come second before .Well done on your victory this time John .

Sunday 18 th December we had our Christmas end of year club run.Instead of convening back at the Gamblins we had a BBQ at the plantation HQ . A large group (~50) of all ages ran for about 80 minutes in the forest while Andrew and Rae Reese /Jones cooked sausages and bacon . Chris F was the only one to trip on the track : but he sprang up unhurt .Chris D overestimated his fitness and had to be escorted out (he's only 12 ).
Being in the shelter of the HQ was welcome as the weather got coldish and it even drizzled for a while . Typical Christchurch summer pattern . Several photos of people eating were taken by John. There were also a few group shots .

Good to see Greg Wilson running .Robyn ran in a Santa suit she got from the Santa run a few days back. This was a ladies suit featuring a stylish skirt rather than trousers . Robyn said it was a bit warm even in the overcast conditions .
Chris , Lorna , Jacob , Anna , Harry (?) and others.

Speaking of older runners , three of them hit 60 this year : John Palmer , John Ingles and Denis Christmas .Happy birthdays guys . Richie M and Juliet grazed 50 as well .
James Rogal ran in the Nelson Gutbuster last weekend. This was three laps of a hilly circuit near the town center and James got 8th out of 46 and only 3 minutes behind the leader ..
Jane Pairman took up cycling recently to enter the Terra Firma duathlon in Pegasus township . She ran 2.5 km , biked 15 km in very windy conditions , then finished off with a 5 km run . She was second in her age grade on debut and was 3 rd female (17 th overall ). Jane said her running legs weren't very strong on the bike .Yes, you need muscles to bike Jane.
A wee tip for online shoe buyers : Wiggle is waiving postage from the UK over xmas (but the NZ dollar has dropped 10 cents, so ....
Nick Merrett is being coached by Craig Motley now. Nick ran a 9.28 3000m on Sat 17 Dec on a rough grass track in blustery conditions .If anyone can get the best out of Nick it will be Craig.

Opinion piece :
There was some discussion about the pros of training for downhill races by actually doing some downhill training. Richard said he won the Crater Rim race in October , but his quads were very sore for four days afterwards. John believed that it's pointless trying to prepare and you should just accept the damage as part of the event. I disagree because I know that if I do a good hill run at least once a week I dont get sore quads from it. Of course if I do a hard downhill race on this background I get some quad soreness - but not as bad as if I had been doing nothing. Its a sort of inoculation effect : a weak dose prevents a full dose from killing you. Comments ?
