Greymouth 2 person Relay - Only Iain and I from CHCH Avon went over to the Coast for this race on Sat 0ct 15 . We drove there in the morning , raced , won the O/50 division , stayed a night and drove back on Sunday morning . Only ten teams in the main afternoon race, but many participants in the various morning races .
Weather was cloudy and wet at the start in Greymouth , but it wasn't cold , and there were only light winds. By the end the sun was out in patches , so running conditions were as good as could be hoped for.
Iain and I managed to beat our perennial rivals Mike Baxter and Pete Davidson (Methodist ) by three minutes .Our total time was our slowest in seven years of doing this event (possibly cos I did the 3 laps)
It is a unique relay concept and quite hard on the runners , especially the one who does three laps . By the end of the first lap you can't believe you can get going and do another lap 30 minutes later .But after you stop, dry off, stretch and get your breath back you're in the car following your partner as they do their lap .By the time they come in you are ready to go again . Of course by the end of your second lap you feel even more wasted . And after the third lap you are totally shot ! After an enjoyable meal at the Greymouth Speights Alehouse and a good sleep , it all seemed worth it.
This year there were six strong senior teams and they cleared out from the four vet teams .Tim Bolter and Chris Tipper (locals ) took out the title in 1 hour 43 .The usual bounteous supper was put on in the RSA.
A whitebait draw was held, but no whitebait had actually been caught to present to the winners .
Next year will be the 60 th running of this event .A resolution was announced to merge some of the morning categories because too many prizes had to be awarded compared to the revenue taken .Iain and I won one Speights Tshirt ,one Speights cap and six Speights ales between us . Iain can't drink beer so he took the clothing items .I don't drink a lot so the beer can sit in the fridge for hospitality.

The Crater Rim races were held on Sun Oct 16 th .About 60 runners in total over the two new distances offered (16.5 km and 23 km ) . Richard Seigne took out overall honors in the 16.5 km event . He took 1 hr 10 mins 44.
Rich said:
" Good conditions but numbers drastically down - only 17 competitiors in the 16.5km (measured at 15.25km by me) and 43 finished the 23km (measured by at least 2 competitors nearer 20.5km). The times for the 23km were said to be about 4 mins slower than measured on competitor's watches. the first three in the longer race had all done Le (bike) Race the day before in very respectable times - Nathan Smith did 2hrs 50 ish! and followed it with 2nd in the 23 km event. If my quads are anything to go by they will be waddling today!
Some good prizes - Crater Rim wine - sadly these were spot prizes and none came my way - perhaps I'll find a Speights somewhere.*...."
