Oct 7 update .

Just a short account of the  Club Prizegiving on Saturday 1 Oct.
Also , a collection of Upcoming Events and a few photos from National Road champs at Wellington.

I popped in to listen to Vajin Armstong's seminar on Long Distance training tonight (Fri 7 Oct ) .This was held on St Asaph St near the heart of the earthquake destruction .I hadn't been this far into the CBD for a year, and it was hard to believe the mess it's in.
Anyway, it was a great little chat put on by the Sri Chinmoy people .Vajin was joined by two ladies who had experience with supporting and competing in very long events (6 day etc ) .Vajin was very informative when he warmed to his subject . He discussed diet (pre, during and after race ) and also mental techniques to overcome difficulties that arise during long races . The usual advice ( to get used to feeding on the go and not to try anything new on race day) was re-iterated. He said that he eats little during a race, but finds the body is more receptive to food early in the event. He related that his own particular circumstances allow him to spend a lot of time training. He acknowledged that most people aren't as fortunate .He said it's important to recover properly from long training runs -even if it means more easy days than scheduled .He related how top African runners he had trained with began their training slow (8 min mile pace) but ended up at sub 5 min pace .Another tip was to use the weekend to do two long runs instead of one very long one ( 4 hours on Sat and 5 hours on Sun ) . Vajin offered that 10 years of meditation had been of benefit to him .There were a few quotes from Sri Chinmoy's writings .
There was a good Q/A session afterwards and I was given a hospitality cup of 'Chi ',  which was indescribably pleasant . Well worth attending .Think I saw Robyn , Sue J and Sue D there too .Robyn did a 42 km jog last Saturday morning while Sue and Sue are having another go at Kepler this year.
Note - the correct way to pronounce Vajin is Va-jaan (not Va-jin )

A warm day for  Club Prizegiving on Sat 1st October , held this year at Russley School  . Rae Reese-Jones arranged this venue for us. The customary team relay was held and lead runners covered about 5 km . Paul Norton's team was a close winner and they earned possibly the most ornate cup of the afternoon for this .
A high quality selection of cakes and edibles followed . The prizegiving was well attended but the hall could have held a lot more if necessary. Three tables of beautifully polished cups (Thanks Sue W ) had to be awarded . President John Ingles variously called upon Craig Eustace , Sue Williams ,Paul Norton , Andrew Reese/Jones , Rodger Ward , John Gamblin and Gary Prest to assist with the different categories . As often happens a few athletes made repeat visits to the podium . Jane Pairman , Nick Merrett , Matt Dryden and Sean Eustace were a few I remember. Some of the senior awards were :

Sean Eustace - most dedicated athlete and Most Outstanding Junior .
Richard Seigne- Outstanding Athlete of the year .
Nick Merrett- Senior XC and Road Champion.
Margot Gibson -Senior XC and Road champ .
Jacob Reese /Jones - Most improved athlete of the year (there were many candidates)
Craig Eustace - Mt Cook Rosebowl for Outstanding Contribution to the club (for services too many to list )
Matt Dryden - presented Akaroa baton for his fine Lap 4 for the Senior team .
Jane Pairman- VWomens Road AND Cross Champion.

The President also drew attention to the Vet Womens team in the recent Akaroa relay. It was a credit to them to get eight runners on the road , to finish 3rd and to record numerous high Vet placings . Regrettably , their 3rd placing didn't attract medals from the organising committee .So the runners themselves arranged to have some medals struck at their own cost .John presented these to Jane and Anne .The following Vet placings were noted :

Jane P - 2nd MW
Robyn P - 1st MW
Sue D-1st MW 50
Sue J -1st MW 50
Anne K -2nd MW 50

This is a good place to say that an athletic club can only operate by the efforts of volunteers .ChCh Avon is particularly well served by enthusiastic members and also parents of children. Frances Cadman , Iain Fussell, John Palmer , Gary Prest are just a few who do lots of invisible little services year-round. Sue Williams and John Gibson with Graham Clarke and Sarah Johnson who put in many hours with the Junior section.Likewise Richard Shaw who sent out all the Junior  results so speedily .
Jane P and Andrew Reese /Jones supervised the Year 5-8's .Andrew was also Club Auditor .

Here are two shots of some of our Canterbury Reps at the National Road Champs earlier in the year at Wellington. In the first we see John Gamblin and a Wellington runner checking their watches to know how long until the Hornet opening time.
Below , Andy R/J (506) and Rich Seigne (507) with two Canterbury team -mates after (?) the race, with  the Hornet* in the background .

LODGE to LODGE Half Marathon and 10 km run/walk
22 October 2011
Mt Lyford to Waiau
The Lodge to Lodge Half Marathon and 10 km Wandle Walk/Run is held annually, along the picturesque Inland road between Mt Lyford and Waiau, North Canterbury. The route meanders from the Alpine Village of Mt Lyford with its snow covered peaks towards the centre of activities in Waiau, crossing several rivers, having a few uphill parts but mainly a slight downhill course.
The race is organised by the Waiau Citizens Association as a community event. A very successfull first year event in 2010 has prompted the organisers to offer this great opportunity again for runners and walkers of all abilities to have a great day in the beautiful North Canterbury country side.
There are several options for the race:
  • Half marathon:  run or walk
  • Half marathon 2 person RELAY: split the half marathon and run half each.
  • 10 km run or walk: start at the halfway point and run the last 10 km to Waiau.
Registration: http://www.lyfordholidayhomes.co.nz/lodge-to-lodge-form.shtml
Hope to see you there.
Thank you very much.
Kind regards

Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge
18km Trail Run or 12km Trail Walk - Saturday October 29, 2011
Formerly the Flagpole Run-Up
The Bell Hill Challenge is an exciting new off-road concept for the Canterbury sports scene.
Enter Now at www.avalanchepeak.co.nz
Situated at Belldoon Farm in the Selwyn Plantation Block, approx 60k west of Christchurch, this 18k run or 12k walk takes participants on a scenic tour of the regions most historic but hidden landmarks....
Bell Hill, found just a few kilometers from Sheffield, was a major landmark used by early settlers as they traveled inland from Christchurch into the foothills and mountains behind Christchurch. At 960m high, Bell Hill summit can be seen from every angle in the surrounding region and once on top the view stretches for more than 30 kilometers in all directions.
The 18k Run and 12k Walk heads up to Bell Hill summit, before continuing on a loop on tussock ridges and forestry tracks above the Selwyn River back blocks. The course is steep in places, taking in tussock farm lands, 4WD drive and single tracks. This course is wonderfully remote but eminently achievable, and is otherwise closed to the public. So it’s a great chance for runners and walkers of all ability to experience one of Canterbury’s hidden gems.
The Bell Hill Challenge is a great way to kick start your summer. It's also great training for other events like Kepler Challenge, Coast to Coast and the Avalanche Peak Challenge, which is also now open for entries...
For more information and to enter Bell Hill Challenge and Avalanche Peak Challenge visit www.avalanchepeak.co.nz
Organised by Avalanche Peak Challenge Inc..
