Just a reminder of which club runs are being held over the Summer season.
1- Wednesday evenings at Harewood Tav clocktower at 5.45 pm -not sure if Rodger and Robyn are still doing this .
2- Sunday morning hill run from Takahe at 8 am - still available but numbers can vary .
3- Sunday 8 am at Burwood Forest HQ- I haven't attended this myself for a while (greatly missing seeing John ,Victor and Denis ) so not sure if anyone still does it.
4-Monthly hosted run :
"Hello people
Our next summer club run has been organised by Andrew Reese-Jones for Saturday 30th November.
Meet at the club rooms by 8:45am. We will have morning tea back at the clubrooms at 10am if you can't drag yourself out of bed to join us for the run. Andrew is bringing carrot cake (I presume he has run this by Rae who no doubt will be baking it). I will bring a gluten free version of the same. There will be some decent plunger coffee and tea etc, not just bog standard instant. Afterwards you will have all afternoon to feel virtuous and work in the garden.
Bring friends / family if you want. This would be a great chance to invite possible members to feel the CHAV love !!
Another run on the social calendar is the Rotorua Marathon, Saturday 3rd May next year. This is the 50th anniversary and is already shaping up to be a big event. Some of us are planning to go. Some have already entered. There is a variety of distances available. But accommodation is starting to fill up. It would be more fun if we were staying together. Could those who are interested please get back to me and we can discuss some options. Those who have just heard about this for the first time, here is the link http://www.rotoruamarathon.co.nz
Also watch out for the annual CHAV Christmas run in December which I hope John Gamblin will organise as usual!

New 4 Lane Training Track available -
-------------------------" We have marked a new 4 lane training track on the Jellie Park field. Please feel free to use it for your training/time trials etc rather than the Burnside School track. Please encourage any other casual runners that you may come across to use Jellie Park rather than the Burnside track.
Many Thanks

Another CHCH Avon runner who went up to Auckland a couple of weekends ago was Robyn who knocked over another marathon for the year .She said it was just a 'slow one' , but 3.41 on that course wasn't too bad --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A note of thanks to every club member who chipped in to help at Rawhiti on Sat 16 Nov on what could turn out to be the hottest day of the year . Initially it looked like Iain Chinnery and I would have to swelter away alone , but the following people thankfully rolled up :
Roger and Cameron Avery , Iain C , Andrew R/Jones , James Rogal , Gary Prest , Anne K , John Ingles , John Gibson and Robyn Perkins. We ended having a good time sitting in the shade at the north end of the track.
It was good to see that the track surface was improved greatly on last season .The hurdles on the main straight all looked in line on Saturday : last year they were all over the place : ) The ground was hard , but free of major dips and bumps .
Club room area looking quite upmarket now (Anne and Iain in left foreground )
We were treated to some good racing , but the heat and warm wind kept times slightly slow .In the 1500 m a brave Angus Bailey went out alone and had opened a good gap at about 1200 m . But Sean Eustace , Matt Prest and Tannock Blair had judged it well and unleashed long sprints to just overhaul Angus . Angus despaired that no-one had gone with him early but we reminded him that a determined front runner often develops the strength to win out (as Dave Bedford once advised a young Sebastian Coe ) . As it was he was only 3 seconds down on the winner.
Natalie Dryden ran well in the warm conditions - she equalled her best time (5 min 16 ) .
Angus well out in the 1500 m -
The 3000m was a two horse race between Matt Dryden and Cameron Avery .A tanned Cameron eventually broke clear to win in 9 min 08 . Rosa Flanagan( Uni ) was first female and third overall (ahead of an improved Joey Dwyer )
Matt D leads Cameron early in the 3000m .
Anna McNab and Jace Donnelly also competed . Jace ran a 55 second 400 m.
The final event of the day saw Iain and I staying till after 6 pm .We manned the drinks table for the 10,000 m .Only five runners finished but such was the heat that they used over forty plastic cups . Finishing times ranged between 43 mins and 1 hour 14 mins . Iain and I observed that either of us could have entered and taken out a Canterbury title of some sort .But we hadn't seen the entry list .

John Hinton has sent news from Long Distance Walks Champs up north where he was a time Judge. John says Courtney contested the 20 km as a qualifying attempt for Hobart . She covered the distance in 1.53.58 as a Junior .This included a 5 m deviation in order that she could cross the 10 km finish before carrying on .This caps a fantastic year for Courtney who has sprung back from injury to new heights.
John said an Australian walker covered the 10 km in 44 minutes . I used to feel ashamed hearing how fast these people can 'walk ' but I now consider their so-called walking to be just a constrained variety of running !
Latest News (Sat 22 Nov ) : At Timaru today Courtney broke the Canterbury WU 20 3000m track racewalk record and came within 7 seconds of the New Zealand mark..
Courtney on her Hobart qualifying 20 km walk .
Here is a article from the Athletics NZ weekly round-up page .One of the photos there shows Time Judge John Hinton seated (in tan trousers ) .

November 10 th saw the Tai Tapu Shoe Clinic Half Marathon races .Weather was warm and muggy with a appreciable breeze on some parts of the course . The tortuousness , shingle and rolling terrain make this a slow course . Plenty of water was available .
Canterbury titles were up for grabs , but there wasn't a huge entry .The scheduling of a number of popular offroad races around this time probably shrank the general public component of the field .
John Gamblin used his current good form to get a title in his age group .He just sneaked under 1.26 on the slow course .
John Hinton walked the quarter in 1.33.33
Denis and I played cat and mouse with Denis eventually winning out with 1.44.02 and me about two minutes behind .I had crammed too many long runs in training and had nothing in the tank for race day .
Thanks to John Gamblin and Victor for doing a lot of the organising and presentation afterwards .
ps - At the prizes I was called to the podium and had a beautiful heavy Bronze medal presented to me for 3rd placed registered M50. Ten minutes later a miscalculation was announced and the medal was taken back : (

Looking ahead to next October , Athletics NZ were so impressed with the management of this year's National Road Relay Champs that they would like Canterbury to host it again at Akaroa in 2014 . Acceptance was confirmed on the condition that Canterbury retain the hosting of 2015 as well (which is the 75th Anniversary )
This is wonderful news to Canterbury clubs and ours especially as our Junior Mens and Womens teams are going from strength to strength .
