Misc News :

1- An 18 year old is planning to run the length of New Zealand soon as a fundraising effort .Victoria Taylor (Hutt Valley Harriers) will average about 70 kms per day and even plans to run a treadmill on the ferry crossing . Starting on Sept 1st she will be in the Banks Peninsula area about the time of the Akaroa relay. There may be opportunities to jog with her over part of this lap and perhaps carry collection buckets.

2- Things are constantly changing in the world and in the running scene. Clubs merge (NewBroly) ; redesign their singlets (Toc -H) and fluctuate in membership (the University club seems to have peaked in popularity and may be settling to more realistic numbers -possibly a result of charismatic coach Craig Motley's departure  - and North Canterbury club seems to be undergoing rearrangements.

3- It looks like the replacement for QE2 will be built in the city centre ; but there is no mention of an athletic track at that facility .There was talk of a stadium somewhere "west " of the city. As a track fundraiser a limited supply of framed squares of mondo from the old track can be purchased :http://www.backontrackqe2.co.nz/
These squares have been cut from the 1500m and 10,000m lines where Walker and Tayler had their moments of glory . Souvenir hunters should be cognisant , however, that the concept of  'Captain Cook's axe ' applies to these relics.

4- Ex CHA vet Dave Holland tells us that he has badly sprained an ankle while enjoying a forest run.
A snapping noise he heard was thought to be a breaking twig , but subsequently appears to have been   two avulsion fractures .These are where a tendon is so strong at it's insertion that it tears out a plug of bone instead of rupturing . Dave could be on crutches for two weeks.

5 - Big recognition for Sean Eustace's record breaking run at Toc-H U16 relay. He took 25 seconds off the old mark (set by Ben Musson ) which was already a good time. Margot Gibson's Junior female  record was unchallenged on Saturday, so CH-CH Avon now holds both titles.

A fresh winter's day at Halswell Quarry for the final Cross Country race of the season (unless you are going to Nationals (Aug 4 ) .The sun got misted over and there was a light Sou' West air stream, but the ground was hard and fast right to the end of the programme. Spikes weren't needed .
A very good day for our runners . The children and Juniors had some outstanding runs (which may appear here soon ) .  Very few Seniors . Our Veterans (M and F ) had a very good day.
Here are a few of the placings achieved (inpooi) .

COTY results below.

Riverside Relay .
The opening road relay of the season was on Saturday 28 th July. As usual in late July the increase in sunshine comes with the return of the good old Nor' East wind , which is fairly fresh at this stage of the year. In fact there seemed to be a part time Sou' West breeze as well ; but the Race HQ area was sheltered from most of it  ,which made it a good place to congregate .Tent pegs were hammered into the rocky ground and no tents blew into the river.

In the 5 km (two lap) relay we originally had six teams entered ,but injury and flu struck during the week so one team had to fold . Even so a number of our runners got out of sickbeds to meet their team duties and are to be commended for that (although no-one is encouraged to exercise vigorously if they are in the middle of bad flu symptoms ).

Our flagship team was the Senior Mens (manned by three teens and two under 23 runners) .... Nick and Dan had fast laps with Matt anchoring them in a great 16.07 time for 11 th fastest overall ....Perrin was hard to pick in his red singlet .... We could have put our top two Vets (ARJ and Rich S)  in the team - they would have improved the team time , but not the placing. I decided against this in order to let the young guys bond as a running unit .Also the Vet 1 team had been looking rather strong in it's own right until sickness took it's toll later in the week. We also had no idea of Rich Seigne's form after 5 weeks in Europe .

The Vet Womens team had personnel concerns during the week ; but Sue , Robyn, Sandie and Anne all ran hard laps with Robyn doing well to be there at all (flu) .

Good running from the Sen Mens 2 team with Nick F and Greg running solid times  .

Apologies to the Sen Mens 3 composite team which had to fold . I had to ransack this team to replace sickies in other teams . Emma and Gary missed out on a run while Samantha got sick on Friday evening anyway .

Richard Seigne got off the plane and ran one of the fastest Vet times of the day .......Anthony had only trained twice in the last 3 weeks, but went under 19 mins......  a bit of good natured ribbing in the pre race emails directed to flu victims by the healthy, who in turn themselves succumbed  - let's just say John has gone 'one up' in their race rivalry ......Iain Chinnery conceded a rare defeat to.. ME ! albeit  courtesy of some non gluten-free pizza, which kept him up  ..... Andrew Reese/Jones vindicated his status as our fastest Vet by a slender 7 secs over Rich S.......Denis's 'favoured person status' with the Selector is on hold after Dave T 'can-opener-ed ' him in a head to head battle. Denis can no longer produce class runs on no training ! And my apologies to Dave who should have been in the MM2 team (he actually beat Vic and me as well ) .... ...The other 'upset' was Craig going 25 secs better than Rodger (and John). He has been injured and hasn't done much racing ,so probably surprised himself on Saturday  . Can't help thinking Rodger was in better nick than 20.12 though. No matter, the team placings weren't affected .

CHCH Avon had some very good Junior teams in the associated Pap TocH Under 16 relay ( here is part of Craig's summary ) :

"  CHAV had the winning team overall,  CHAV teams had two first places and a second place in the three grades, CHAV had fastest teams in two of the three grades (and second fastest in the other grade), CHAV broke the team and an individual course record  , CHAV had 8 fastest individual's times in the age grades, and we had some MASSIVE improvers.  See below for all the exciting details.

Most of the time it looked like organised chaos and it can be difficult to know exactly what's going on in a handicapped relay race with so many teams, but we got all teams to the start line and nobody had to run twice (although that was touch and go in nearly half of the teams for awhile) AND when the dust settled and the results came out there were many INCREDIBLE stories of success to tell.
Thanks to PToCH for doing an incredible job of dealing with all the last minute changes, making sure all teams started and changed at the right times and having results out the same day.  Thanks to all the parents who coralled the teams and got them all where they needed to be.  Thanks also to all the parents and senior club members who helped out with marshalling duties not only in the junior relay, but later into the afternoon as well.
CONGRATULATIONS to the WINNING TEAM OVERALL - CHAV Storm.  To win a race on handicap either means the handicappers like you, or you run better than you ever have before.  In this case 3 team members ran HEAPS better than they ever have before and the fourth was a last minute replacement due to illness who also did the team proud.  In fact the CHAV two BIGGEST IMPROVERS of the DAY were both in this team.  Laura Clarke and Rosie Phipps were both over a minute faster than estimated.  They were backed up by a STORMING finish from Lily Keenan who also improved on her estimated time by nearly 30 seconds.  To give you an idea of how BIG these improvements were, across all of the other CHAV runners the average difference between estimated and actual times was less than 5 seconds.
CONGRATULATIONS to the FIRST PLACED BOYS TEAM - CHAV Tornadoes.  The team of Daniel RoswellCameron ClarkLaurence Pithie and Thomas Clarke were the sixth boys team to start and steadily ran through the field to take first place on the final lap.
CONGRATULATION to the SECOND PLACED MIXED TEAM - CHAV Typhoons.  The team of Easton StocksPaige AveryMeg Kokich and Michael Hermens.  A GREAT team effort from this young team who gained the lead on the final lap and almost held on only to be pipped by a few seconds at the end.
CHAV Thunder to COURSE RECORDS - The last team to start at +26 minutes and some 5 minutes behind the next closest team, our CHAV Thunder boys team had a lot of catching up to do and they didn't muck around.  Sean Eustace set them on their way breaking the INDIVIDUAL COURSE RECORD with his 7:40 lap a MASSIVE 25 seconds quicker than the previous best time.  This set the tone for the team and Matt Prest (8:15), Cameron Avery (8:08) and Angus Bailey (8:18) all flew through their laps to SMASH the TEAM COURSE RECORD by more than 1.5 minutes.
CLUB OF THE YEAR points from this event are based on FASTEST TEAMS and on top of our record breaking boys team, our CHAV Blizzard team of Jacob Reese-JonesChristopher DrydenTaylor Waddington and Lwamba Chileshe were FASTEST MIXED TEAM and our CHAV Lightning team of Charlotte Blair,Samantha KokichPaige Waddington and Natalie Dryden were SECOND FASTEST GIRLS TEAM.  A SPECIAL THANKS to Taylor Waddington who was feeling very unwell, but in choosing to run made a HUGE contribution both to her team and to our Club of the Year chances.
Full results can be seen here - PToCH U16 Road Relay. Another stand out feature is the 8 FASTEST INDIVIDUALS in the different age grades.  GREAT RUNNINGEaston Stocks (B8), Thomas Clarke (B9), Laurence Pithie (B10), Laura Clarke (G12), Christopher Dryden (B13), Angus Bailey (B14), Natalie Dryden (G15), and Sean Eustace (B15).
