As in 2011, this was run on Burnside Park because the Ilam Oval is still the home of a pre-fab cluster for the Varsity. This year the weather was better with a bit of sun and that cold July wind was somewhere else .
The course was similar to last year too - two laps , but in reverse. It was also deemed 'short' again (is this to create flattering 4 km times ? ) .The carved hurdle was also there ; but a bypass lane was provided for those not confident of their vaulting skills. Spot prizes were handed to anyone who did take the leap.
The course was well marked apart from a part near Mem Ave where it wasn't immediately clear to jump the rail or not . Spikes weren't needed - even in the 'ravine' .
The junior race over one lap was well contested with kids - many from CHCH Avon. The handicapping was pretty good with a huge clump of runners coming home together.
The Senior field was a bit sparse compared to the old days .Only six CHA O/20's there : John P, Chris, Denis , Craig , Jane and I . In the U/20's there was Matt D ,Sean, Matt P, Tannock, Jacob, Josh ,Dan C and Cameron. I think we might have outnumbered Uni. John Palmer got a good start and won the event , closely followed by Chris. The handicapping was a bit harsh for such a short distance (3.3 km ? ) and none of the young guys caught the early runners .

Thanks to University Club - particularly Mike B , Simon and George - for putting on the event ; and Daniel for inviting us.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are a few news snippets :
Looking ahead to Road/ Relay part of the season (which isn't far away ) we are probably going to have our Club Road Champs in conjunction with the Canty Champs out at Pegasus on Aug 18 .We made this decision because of a lack of other suitable dates .August the 11 th was the only contender , but that is the Greta Valley relay, and we would like to be seen to be supporting that . Aug 4th is National XC Champs in Hamilton where quite a few of our runners will be . A suggestion has been received to have our road Champs on our closing day (Sept 29th ) .This has pros and cons :
1- It would clash with Golden Mile ( dear to Paul N's heart, and an institution)
2- Results, trophies and certificates wouldn't be ready for Prizegiving.
3- Some runners would not stay fit right up to Sept 29 , as most of the year's winter fixtures would be over.
4- It would involve the race being held at (probably ) Hagley Park , then everyone driving off to wherever the Prizegiving was being held . Chances of that happening = ?
5- On the pro side , it would probably mean everyone over 14 would run 5 kms , which is better than 10 kms (for seniors and vets ) . The weather might be better in late September .
Have a think about this .

Denis described his findings on running in Perth. Most races are on Sundays because a lot of people work Saturdays. They have a sort of City to Surf race like we do ( "Perth to Surf "? ), over 6 km and 14 km . There are opportunities to train in beautiful surroundings everywhere. At this time of year the temperatures are moderate eg 16-22 degs and down to 4 degs at night .Train services are plentiful and reasonably priced.

the AGM asked if the club should have a Facebook page. I have no time to do that . It would need to be tended constantly , as Facebook's lifeblood is currency . This blog alone takes all my spare moments . Doing a page for the club would be a full-on job and of uncertain benefit . Facebook is becoming too complex to use properly. Some writers think it's days are numbered anyway .
If our young runners controlled the club they would probably use FB as the main info source and things would be more upbeat ; but they probably wouldn't want to do all the boring stuff that goes with any public organisation . If anyone is keen to establish a Facebook page for CHCH Avon just contact someone in the committee , or me .

If you see Anne K anywhere in the next few days , wish her a happy birthday . Not sure what her chronological status is, but a little bird said it's a significant one.
-----------------
This week it's Canterbury Cross Country Champs already . The following weekend (July 28 ) sees the first road relay (the Riverside ) .Entries for both are now formally closed .Riverside teams will be sent to you soon .
---------------
Nick Merrett might be heading to USA. Richie said Nick has changed his educational goals towards securing a scholarship somewhere in the US. He will follow a familiar pattern for runners in Canterbury and our club too . In one way it will be good if he succeeds ; but in another we'd rather he stayed and kept running here. Good luck Nick.

Teenage Run No 1 had 23 people turn up, which isnt a bad result for the opening event .Make sure you get along to Run No.2 and hear all the training tips of the guns ( food afterwards too )
Teenage Run No. 2
The second run of this series is being hosted by the Papanui Toc H Running Club and will be Sunday 22nd July starting from the Information Centre by the Bottle Lake main car park at 9:30am.
These runs are to get our younger Canterbury runners training together in a social, non-competitive environment, and make sure they know all the great running tracks we have around the city.
In response to feedback from some runners the Papanui Toc H group will run the session in 3 groups – one group running 45 minutes at a slower pace and the other two running 55 minutes and 1hr 10 minutes. The runs will all be in the forest so there will be no hills to worry about.
Once again food and drink will be provided at the end of the run and we should be all finished by 11.00am. See you there!
Any questions see Annette at the Sumner tent or ring her on 021 780 684
