Subject:
RE BOOK ON PETER SNELL AND MURRAY HALBERG ERA (1956-1965)

I have been given your address on the athletic grapevine.

Since November, 2010 I have been working on a daily basis to create a book that will probably be entitled: FAST FEET UPON THE EARTH.  It will be a book with a lot of new data as well as many new photos, and will also feature Bill Baillie, Barry Magee, John Davies, Neville Scott, Marise Chamberlain, Jeff Julian and all of the great runners of the above decade.

I competed against and trained with all of these runners (except Marise) and was a nationally ranked three mile runner (13.45.7) and got 3rd in the nationals in this event (1961) chasing Halberg and Magee.

I am currently gathering a list of addresses of those who may be interested in such a book. About mid-late 2014 everything will be completed, at which time those on my mailing list will be contacted giving full details and along with the price. At that time you have the option to purchase - or otherwise.

If you are currently still active within a club, kindly provide the email of your secretary so promotion of the book can be made to club members.

I look forward to your reply, as well as your expression or your interest - as well as any names and addresses of family/old running mates, etc.

SHOE CLINIC  will be offering us special deals over the normal instore ones and they may be supplying some prizes for our club events . Take a look at the text under the SHOE CLINIC logo at the top of this page for current news.

here is an interesting article about exercise theory which initially looks bad for Lydiard based techniques . A closer look reveals some doubtful reasoning (imho)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first of the extra 5 km races was held on Feb 7 th at Hagley park .Everything was the same as for the recent Shoe Clinic series except that all the organisation was done by our club . John Gamblin had the whole thing beautifully organised for the twenty or so volunteers . It was a crash course in learning the jobs ,but we got all the races under way on time . A heavy drizzle came across for about an hour  .There were about 30 registered runners and possibly 100 in the fun run . A kids event of approx 1.7 km went off at 5.30 pm.

Nick Rennie won the Mens event in about 15.14 and Nicki McFadzien  took out the Women's race in a good time of 17.11. Our own Lydia M came second in 18.33 .
Iain Chinnery was at his best in the cool conditions to clock 19.50 ( not a bad V60 time )
Tannock Blair (15 )  took time off from track to have a go over 5kms and did a nifty 17.19 .

Thanks to Sean Farrell of Shoe Clinic for providing generous spot prizes ( incl $250 pair of shoes)
Nice to see popular running identity Chris Cox at both runs and still going well at just under 19 mins.
The finish mat was set up , so some results will probably appear soon (watch this space )
RESULTS(Race 1 )

The second race was held on Tuesday 14th and it was yet another coldish drizzly evening after a rainy wintry day .Conditions were perfect for fast times and Nicki McF (Uni)  flew round in 17.01 well beating Ants Rogal in 17.28 .  Richard Seigne did 16.48 and Matt Dryden set another PB with 16.12 .
Margot and Lydia cruised around in 18.42 and 18.47 .
results (Race 2)

Another $250 pair of Shoe Clinic shoes was awarded to a lucky fun runner.
Interesting to see how the numbers varied over the two weeks :

Race three was held on Tues Feb 21 and incredibly, it rained .What are the chances of three consecutive Tuesdays in summer drawing rain ? One can't help thinking that attendances were affected .The highlight of the registered race was seeing Nicki McFadzien run 16.44 for third place overall  behind Alex Cowden and Matt Dryden . She looked fit and strong right to the finish. Iain Chinnery clocked a good 20.04 only two days after contesting three CMA track events .Iain has finished the season with a number of titles and placings (hopefully he'll email me the exact details )
I ran my first race since a traumatic gluteal incident three weeks ago. Three weeks of slackness produced a one minute decay in race time. It was nice to win a Hoyts movie pass in the spot prizes though .This turned out to be a double pass , so I get to watch two movies (or maybe just scalp them like Trev Mallard) .

The summer, such as it was , is drawing to a close and soon it will be 'acorns in Hagley Park' time again. Opening day /Registration is probably March 31st . The club wants to cast as wide a net as possible for new members . Existing members are encouraged to bring any friends along who want to experience a year of club running .CHCH Avon is happy to sign people of any age , ability or aspiration .We have a strong Vet Mens section ; a growing Vet Womens section and very strong Childrens squad. We have always had good seniors but suffer somewhat from depletion such that we seldom have a large group of them .This applies to both male and female .

The advantages of being a registered member of a running club are :

1- A cheap way to maintain fitness and health.
2- Companionship with other athletes (who are good , have been good or want to be good )
3-Affiliation to Athletics NZ allowing participation in National and International competition.
4- Automatic entry to a full season of Interclub races (road &cross country) over winter, and track competition in summer.
5- Access to experienced runners who can advise on all aspects of training and competition.
6- Access to the wider athletic community .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a message specifically for younger runners (aged 14 - 23 ) about an idea that is being discussed . Craig Eustace will probably be asking you what you think about it soon.

" The Cross Country & Road committee have identified our  young adults as a group of particular focus for the 2012 season. While there are a number of fantastic groups supporting our younger athletes unfortunately this age-group (ages 14 – 23) is often where people leave our sport and often don’t come back (or come back as much older athletes).

From some feedback  we have gathered a big part of keeping this age group interested is providing an opportunity for them to interact together in a more social environment ( other than race days) to share the enjoyment of the sport so we are keen to have groups of these younger people meet together to run in a more relaxed manner on Sunday mornings during the season.

I am therefore canvassing all clubs to find out whether you would have some members of your club that would:

1.       Like to participate (please send any contact details through to me or give me a key contact I could interact with)
2.       Be prepared to host a run on a rotating basis (every 4 to 6 weeks)
a.       Note that we will have a range of abilities so you would need to consider at least 3 hosts each time - at least one person hosting a faster group wanting to run 90 minutes; then at least 2 hosts for a medium paced group (5 minute pace) running perhaps 45 to 60 minutes ( the latter group I suspect would generally have most of the girls)
b.      Don’t expect teenagers to run early; runs would probably need to start 9am ish
c.       Perhaps providing some drink & biscuits at the end for the post run chat

These runs are not meant to cut across any of your own club activities but instead allow like minded kids mix together and hopefully form friendships that will keep them in the sport right through to the senior grades. Clubs though can use these runs to show these athletes some of the fantastic running places we have on offer.

Once organised we will contact all involved and let them know on a weekly basis the venue, time and hosts etc for the upcoming run.

Hope your club will be amongst those who respond – any questions give me a call on 021 780 684 / 384 3639 (evenings) or send me an email. Ideally we have this up & running by the beginning of the season (April) so it would be good to hear back by the end of Feb.

Cheers

Looking ahead to the winter season :  We may be moving the Club Cross Country course to just the west side of the Rotokohatu paddock .This will make setting up easier , remove the road crossing and make it more spectator friendly .

We might also co-incide our Club Road Champs with the Canty Road Champs .
And it seems we will have the Hilltop changeover to look after in the Takahe /Akaroa relay in September.

Latest scientific news is what all knew would one day happen : they have found a way to grow edible meat protein in the laboratory . It sounds a bit macabre  but once the ethicists have checked it out I'd be happy to eat it . Not sure how they get the muscle to exercise as it's growing -perhaps regular electric shocks to cause contraction. With no advanced  nervous system there would be no pain or awareness of misery. Real animals could have their present servitude lightened and swathes of rainforest and pasture could be re-purposed.
Vegetarians could eat real food without remorse.

Anyone using the Rapaki track will have noticed that the Council , not satisfied to have removed the timber on the public seating , have now taken the metal frames out of the ground as well .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

City to Surf is March 25 .only a 6 km run this year and will peg you back $15 to a charity .more details soon.
latest news : there is also a 14 km run starting at 9 am whereas the 6 km starts at 10 am. I have been told that the 14 km course is closer to 15 km , so this is looking like a distance event . The old12 km was probably about enough for the the general public .
INFO HERE : COURSE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The inaugural Cashmere Downs 10 km event was held at 6.30 pm on Tuesday 28 . There was a mild Sou'west , but it was a golden late summer evening. Over 100 runners faced the starter .The out and back course took runners onto the rolling roads around the quarry . With four solid climbs the course was not one for fast times .But there were several good athletes and the racing was serious .
CHA had four people in the field .Richard Seigne , recovering from a 75 km bike race on Saturday , clocked just under 36 mins , for 10th place overall (approx) .
Iain Chinnery , showing his best form for a while , ran a well judged 42.06 .
Sue Davis made a surprise appearance and did 52.14 approx  , which is good for her on a slowish course .She was well up in her field
Chris Florkowski continued his comeback with a 48.20 approx.
Nick Rennie took out line honours for the Men , while Alex Williams (Uni) ran strongly for the Womens' win.
RESULTS :
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave Holland has stepped up his training in Brisbane .He recently ran 20 km just to find a spot to swim. Then he did an interval set of 12 by 400 m (30 sec recovery) before sunrise . Finally he clocked an 18.56 time trial for 5km . Dave lamented that once upon a time 18.56 would be a warm-up run for him .*

Speaking of departed club members , it was good to see Ian and Denise MacGregor on Saturday . They are well and living in Southampton .Ian does no running now due to a touchy hip , but is enjoying a bit of biking.

* these sessions were done on separate days.
