January 17 th update

Just an update with some new results , upcoming events etc
Hagley Race No 5 - Results Race 5
77 registered and possibly 350 in the fun run. Overcast warm Nor West conditions made for some fast running for those who didn't mind clammy heat. Nick Merrett pb'd with 15.52 and Richard Seigne easily won the V 45-54 grade with a 16.48 . Not a single ChCh Avon woman ran in the reg race ! Matt D advanced his best time by 2 seconds to 16.20 .

here are the  5km series placings achieved by our best runners .

Sen Men -Matt Dryden  (5th overall -superb effort)

M45 - Richard Seigne (2nd overall - cant afford to miss a race at this level ! )
        - Anthony Rogal  (3rd overall)
        - John Gamblin    (6 th overall )

M55 - We had four runners in the top ten (Iain C , Rodger W, Mike V , Denis C )

Dear Athletics Fans - we are now only a week from a festival weekend of Track & Field that all Cantabrians can look forward to and be proud of.

Learn the Secrets
A brand new development this year will be the Q&A Coaching Session on Sunday 5th Feb with some of NZ middle-long distance running's biggest names - Nick Willis, Nikki Hamblin, Adrian Blincoe, and Kimberley Smith.  Tickets will be available at the International Track Meet or on the door if space is available, normally $5/head but discounted to $2/head for Athletics Canterbury registered athletes and coaches.

Start with a training run round Hagley Park with the stars (or at your own pace) starting at 9am, to be followed at 11.30am by the coaching/Q&A session in the Old Boys' Theatre at Christ's College.

International Competition
New Zealand's premier track and field meet returns to Christchurch, going back to the glory days with the stunningly intimate grass track venue at Christ's College. See Olympic medallists Valerie Adams & Nick Willis and teenage sensation Jacko Gill in action, along with an array of international stars and the cream of NZ's domestic talent (including the return to home territory of Canterbury favourite Rebecca Wardell).

The venue looks amazing - look us up on Facebook to see photos of it undergoing the finishing touches. The grass track is in sensational shape, and brand new IAAF-standard throwing circles have been laid specially for the shot put and discus competitions.

Tickets on sale now, details at www.internationaltrackmeet.co.nz/ITM/tickets - available online or at various running shoe stores and City Council Leisure Centres around town.  Gates open at 3pm, get there early to avoid the rush.

Charity Luncheon
There are now less than 30 tickets left at the most unique track & field function you'll experience this year.

Sumptuous 3-course meal, video presentation by Sir Peter Snell, panel discussion with stars of the past and present from Bruce Tulloh and Barry Magee to Nick Willis & Adrian Blincoe, and a charity auction of what may well be the finest array of track and field memorabilia ever assembled in NZ.

From 12.30pm Friday 3rd Feb at the Christchurch Casino - tickets $100/head for individuals or a table of up to 12.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's the link to Race 3 of the Hagley Asics 5 km series RESULTS Race 3
No summary available - I was totally physically exhausted and fell asleep at home !
Matt Dryden is 'on fire' though with a 16.22 for 6 th place overall as an M17 year old .

Race 4 results here Race 4 Results
a perfect night for racing with a dying Sou 'Wester providing calm, cool conditions . A night for series pb's and a few of our runners got some . Good to see big fields in both races and finally someone went under 15 mins (Andrew D 14.52 ) .Hannah Newbould clocked 16.42, which doesn't often happen in the Womens event . Chris Dryden is showing his family pedigree with a 20.24 in the senior race.
Where are all the medal winning CHCH Avon Vet women ? And alot of our younger runners haven't showed for a single race eg Elise , Lydia , Laura , Nick ,Perrin , Margot ,Evie etc etc

Iain went down to Timaru in the hope of nabbing a V60 Steeplechase title on Sat 21 Jan. He got it, but there was drama on the track , as he relates here....
" Mike
Timaru was more dramatic than expected.
Kevin Prendergast and I went down with Michael Bond in his car. Only 3 in the 2000 steeples - a girl of 16, Michael and me. On the second lap Michael hit a hurdle, fell flat on his face on the track and knocked himself out. When I came round to the spot, he was still lying unconscious on the track with people helping him and the other two of us were directed around him and continued with the race. As soon as I finished (8:48 but I am a Canterbury Champ - the girl beat me) I went to see him and he was sitting up and conscious. However, he did not know he was in Timaru or why he was there or how he got there. They called an ambulance and I followed it to the hospital in his car. After a couple of hours in Emergency and plenty of tests they decided to keep him overnight. So I returned to the track to pick up Kevin (M55 steeples Champ) and drove home in Michael's car. His wife planned to go down this morning, so I will call this evening to see how he is. "

Mike is a tough rooster and we certainly hope he is OK .
latest news (Tues 24) :  Mike is still in Timaru Hospital under observation .
Latest news (Feb 2nd ) : Mike is out of hospital and ran in the final Hagley race , so a good outcome.

Track users switched from Burnside to Rawhiti on Jan 14 th . The New Brighton home track has been preened for competition. Note that it only has six lanes .

I popped along for the opening meeting .The field is fairly well protected from the prevailing Nor 'East wind . The highlight of the day was watching V50 Andrew Stark dispatching all the younger CHAV runners in the 1500m and 800m . Andrew is in sizzling form and clearly enjoying it. Alex Manton ran him hard in the 800m though - he sat on his shoulder for the whole second lap, and pushed Andrew to a 2.08 on grass .
Apparently there is a high quality grass track available on the University fields off Ilam rd. I have this on Iain C's authority.

Dont forget the Buller Marathon /Half Marathon in early Feb. Everyone should have a go at this event for it's scenic course , fastish times and after function .It's almost always guaranteed to be a hot day after the event.
-------------------------------------------
City to Surf this year will be on Sunday March 25 .The traditional course is unavailable . I think it will start at Pioneer Stadium and finish only 6 km later somewhere else . Most serious runners would prefer the the 12 km distance -what's wrong with an out and back course ?
