commemorative medals for all finishers brought out the ChCh running community .There were perhaps 200 starters . CHCH Avon provided about 21 of them .Results are available now Gov's Bay results

I've had a request to increase the size of the script and use a brighter highlighting color in these posts. Hope the aqua and green isn't too gaudy. The only blog-supplied font choices are " too small " and " too big " . Mind you ,the person who made the request isn't due any favors after his incomprehensibly lenient handicap in the Gov's Bay Classic on Saturday .

Sept 3 rd 2011.
Early reports of our two Junior Teams at NRR at Hunua : The Junior Women got within 10 seconds of 3rd place .Apparently Margot clawed back 3 minutes on the anchor lap but ran out of road to overtake the bronze medal. The Junior Men were 9th in a big field of teams - not a bad result considering they were mainly 14/15 year olds in a grade where 19 is the maximum permitted age.

A huge club entry for Gov's Bay 10 km on Sat 10th Aug .Twenty three CH-CH Avon runners will be out there earning their 50 th commemoration medals .
There should be plenty of spare cars available to carry us all back from Lyttelton.
John Ingles has confidently predicted he will jog back after the race (a Tui moment ?)
Details will be sent to everyone this week.

Club Road Champs were held on Sat afternoon Aug 27 th 2011. A glorious early spring day
was a welcome change to the extended winter we've been having. This probably accounted for the good turnout of runners . All the race starts went well , the distances were accurate and the finish line was in the correct place - no easy matter because each year the white marks weather away and memory (mine) can't be relied on to re -do them.
Nick and Margot took out the senior titles ..... not bad considering they aren't seniors yet . Both were clear winners, but Nick will be a bit concerned about Sean Eustace's hyperbolic improvement curve for second place .
Andrew R/J had an easy VM win with Rich Seigne absent (he actually ran a season best time without him there) .Jane also had an untroubled VW win scoring a sub 20 time off a recent foot problem.
John Gamblin added more lustre to his year with a VM50 win from Ant Rogal.
Anne held off a gradually improving Sue Jo in the VW50 race.

18km Trail Run or 12km Trail Walk - Saturday October 29, 2011
Situated at Belldoon Farm in the Selwyn Plantation Block, approx 60k west of
Some very good runs from CHCH Avon people at the NZ Road Champs at Wellington on Saturday 20 Aug. No indications of what the weather was like but going from the results it seems that conditions were close to optimum . Courteney Ruske walked 5 km in 25 .15 (2 mins better than at Canty Champs ) to win the W19 GOLD medal.
Sean Eustace took home an M14 GOLD too with his 9 min 38 secs for 3 kms.
Richard Seigne pocketed an M45 BRONZE with 10 km in 34.45 and team SILVER.
ARJ just missed a Bronze in the M40 grade (34.43)and got a team SILVER.
John Gamblin ran 10 th in the M50 grade with 37.50 and got a team BRONZE.
Matt Dryden ran 6 km in 20.43 for 8th in a strong national field.
Nick Merrett put a good one together in the M19 8000m to record 27.02 .
G12 Harriet Bush ran 2000m in 7.44 for 5 th place.
Additionally Dave C and Zach B also ran well in the 10 km(35.00) and 8 km(28.26) respectively.
Ex CHCH Avon Richard Swan still going well with a 32.40 in the 10 km.

Sadly, we missed a chance to run in the Greta Valley relay held this weekend. The week of nasty weather probably caused the team's collapse . A team of six should have been easy enough to assemble, but we had to import one Pap Toc-H runner to make up an entry. Then two confirmed members pulled out during the week , so we had to withdraw from the event.
As it happened the weather was fine and sunny at Motunau, so it would have been an enjoyable day. Mike R the Organiser , felt the event was a success, so it was a shame we weren't there. Robyn said she would use the day to run 36 km instead !

Dont forget there's a double distance forest race out at Loburn on Sunday Sept 4 .Greg and Richie did the Half Marathon there last year and said it's a great place to run .In fact they are biking out there this time too and will run the 'Half' before biking home .They would like to "welcome" anyone to bike out there with them ( 'lure' is probably the more appropriate word )

Aug 14 th 2011.
An exasperating week as we tried to get a team ready for the Timaru relay . We never had a big enough pool of runners to cover injuries and withdrawls .The organisers encouraged us to try hard because they were struggling to get enough teams to make the event viable . So I entered a team and kept my fingers crossed .Fifteen teams was seen as the minimum and they eventually signed sixteen. Unfortunately for us , one of our runners (Geoff) got a swollen knee during the week and our reserve had a cold and didn't feel like racing . So reluctantly I pulled the pin at 7 pm on the night before . The rental van was outside my house with a full tank and nowhere to go ! Apologies to all who were looking forward to the day away .Nick and Geoff wont be eligible to break any M19 records next year, so an opportunity was lost.
There is another relay on this weekend (Aug 20 ) though. Greta Valley has shorter laps , is closer to CHCH and only six runners per team. The way the weather is looking tonight this event might be in trouble by Saturday , but for now we are planning to go .I have five names already - email me (or fill in the Application form ) if you'd like to join (currently Robyn , Iain , Denis, Alex , me ).
Dave Holland is lapping up the warm weather in Brisbane .Here is an account of his second long off-road race in 3 weeks .He was 10 th overall from another big field but once again was beaten by two V50 s (not the same ones as last time )
Speaking of weather, I'm getting reports of how difficult it is to train with icy footpaths and the frozen air in the city today .Dedicated runners resent missing a day of training and will do anything to get their fix. Legendary English marathoner Ron Hill never missed a day and when travelling to overseas events would run around the airport departure lounge if confined there between flights.
"I did that 22km off-road race at the weekend. It was really great. All on dirt forest roads, several river crossings and loads of really steep climbs. It took me 1:58 and even taking into account the severity of it I think it might be longer than 22km. It was all through forest next to a huge lake. Really beautiful scenery. I think I finished about 10th but no results yet. I was racing with two other guys most of the way and whilst I was able to easily pull away from them on the flat and moderate uphills, they just killed me on the steep uphills, many of which I had to walk using the mountain runner technique of hand on thigh. In the end I beat one of them but the other got away. I don't think I have fully regained my leg strength after the lay-off and op. Still. Pretty pleased with how I felt at the end. That's by far the longest I have run for, for over a year and the only long run I have done was the last off-road race I did about three weeks ago! So next year, get your act together and come over and do it! "
August 6th 2011/ Canterbury Road Champs Report.
CH-CH Avon's own Victor Gamperle organised the venue out at Pegasus town .Weather was a day of two halves. In the morning there was a strong cool Westerly , but around 1 pm it switched to an Nor' East. Both winds were experienced in a very direct manner in the Pegasus township because of it's exposed situation . Four tents took flight in the morning and were badly damaged . One bailed up Sandie G like a big pteradactyl all with angular limbs and flapping leather . Victor kicked it back to the stoneage though ( the boot of his car ) .
From the perspective of a cyclist, it was a rare tail wind there and back (spot on 52 mins each way to Papanui)
As usual the feature event (combined SM ,VM and SW ) was a big field , but some of the other races were sparsely contested . First off for us just before noon was Courteney Ruske in the 5 km walk . She won the title in 27 mins 25 and was all smiles at the end . I have walked 5 kms a few times at a brisk pace in civilian gear, and found it hard to better 40 mins , so this seems like a good effort from our best walker .
Matt Dryden and Dan Coats knew they'd have to stay with Ben Musson in the 6 km M16 event to have any hope of winning . This trio easily led the field for a few laps before Matt slowed dramatically for a tight calf . Dan stayed in pursuit of Musson and got a 2nd place in 20.59 . Matt held on for 3rd just holding out a fast -closing Tannock Blair .
Sean Eustace cruised over the line a minute ahead of his B14 rivals in their 3 km event. Sean was hardly out of breath as he chatted to us .Those new multicolored lightweight flats would have helped . When he took them off they needed a stone on top to stop them blowing away. Matt Prest and Jacob Reese/ Jones took 2nd and 3rd titles.
Natalie Dryden got a 2nd placing in the G14 3000m as well .
The M19 grade is always exciting as this is a feeder group for top seniors in years to come. Nick Merrett was our only blue singlet in a purple crowd. Nick was going well until disaster struck in the form of an irregular heart rhythm. Possibly a legacy of all those hard runs with the flu ! Luckily he was OK after a rest .Uni's Alex Gorrie went on to win the 8 kms in 26.18.
The Vet Women ran with W 17/19 field which made for a good field of runners . Lydia Marshall and Laura Wood decided to go with the lead group headed by T.Crossley (VW) and R.Flanagan (W16) . Elise and Evie both had very good runs ,but couldn't keep up with this group . Near the finish the top four were strung out but Laura and Lydia were in there . It was hard to tell which CHA runner would get the W19 title but in the end the triathlete (Laura ) took it . Both would have been happy with their times (18.06 and 18.16 ) in the windy conditions . These might be PBs for them ?
Laura heads to Beijing soon and couldn't be in better form. She said her swimming is better than her running ( the saying that comes to mind is "you cant necessarily win a tri with a good swim, but you can lose it with a bad one"
Jane and Robyn were both unable to race and would have done well if they had .Jane could probably have taken the VW 45 title, even with her sore foot ,but resisted the temptation. Sue Johnson was our fastest Vet finisher and was top in her grade .Sue is definitely improving . Juliet also had a better run, not far behind Sue D.
We had no runners in the Senior Women's event . Few people could have beaten Fiona Crombie anyway as she tore up the course in 34 mins 40 .
Andrew and Rich ran close together for 9kms as they often do , but this time it was Andrew who broke clear to cross the line 6 seconds ahead in 35.18.Rich got first placed V45 though .
John Gamblin had another superb Champs run to take out fastest 50 yr old in 37.12.
Roger also peaked for this event with a solid 40.58 .He was followed by evergreen Denis in 41.39.
Iain got 4th best 60 yr old time of 43.09. Frank ran 44.37 - not bad for a chap who barely runs once a week . Chris cruised in a little further back .
Riverside Relay July 30 . One of those blustery cold winds that spring up at the end of winter for the first road relay .
The wind tipped over the finish banner twice - quite a feat- considering the weight of the concrete tyres anchoring it . The wind definitely slowed the course times down.
Selecting for this event was tough because there is such a long interval between the entry cut-off and race day(~ 13 days) . Sickness , injuries , a wedding and latecomers saw the line-ups change many times . Thanks to John McB for patiently accepting my final , final, final teams .
Anyway, we put two Vet Mens , one Vet Womens , and one each SM and SW team out on the road . The senior Womens team only materialised in the last couple of days, but it was worth it because they were 2nd fastest overall.Margot was second fastest SW of the day .
The Vet Women were fastest team on handicap . The suspicious might observe that their lap 4 runner, and the Event Chief Handicapper, were one and the same person (namely Anne K ) but I couldn't possibly comment. Perhaps it was SueJo's two min improvement on 2010 that did it . Sue D completed 2 laps despite a back problem that had challenged some of the best painkillers available (so she told me ).
The Senior Mens team was just a vehicle to give Nick .Matt and Dan Coats a time trial .We couldn't get two other seniors to join them so John Ingles and I made up the five .Dan did well for a 14 yr old and Matt and Nick were well up in the placings .
The Vet Mens 1 team were minus two stars and you can't win events in Canterbury like that .Andy R/J was 3rd best vet of the day though . Richie decided to altruistically 'gift ' JohnGam a win in their ongoing contest.
The Vet mens 2 team personnel remained stable all week - a testament to the health and reliability of 50 yr olds ? They all ran well - Frank ran right into a protruding branch and crossed the line with a bit of 'claret' running down his head . He also had no lunch and was on lap 5 , so by 3 pm he was hungry as well as bleeding . Paul Norton signalled his increasing physical soundness with a team best of 20.05 .
The CHAV Thunder team of Sean Eustace, Tannock Blair, Matt Prest and Angus Bailey broke the event record for FASTEST Boys Team. Three team members will still be young enough to run again next year.
Riverside results 2011.
.
Being the sole selector I should do a report card on my performance for this relay. Of course I knew that Denis and Norts would run a shade faster than Rodger , but I still put Rodger in the VM1 team. Why ? because Paul was a 50/50 chance of blowing something up and Denis hasn't beaten Rodger for over a year in anything due to lack of activity. I also knew that Rodger is consistent and wouldn't be far off the pace. And so it proved (Paul beat him by 18 seconds approx; Denis less ) .I took a punt that 18 seconds wouldn't be fatal to the VM1 team's chances .
Secondly , why didn't I move Norts and Denis from the VM2 team into the Sen Mens team instead of me and Jingles? Well, neither of these teams was ever going to place highly in their grades .Their contribution to COTY points would be minor and any juggling wouldn't change that alot . Additionally, the VM2 team was a selectorial rock of stability compared to the other teams and I was reluctant to fiddle with it . As it turned out we still came out top club for the event COTY-wise so I am satisfied with how I called it.
Quote of the day : "most runners do their hard days too easy and their easy days too hard " (from John Palmer).
Humourous story of the day: Dan (14) came up and asked "What's a handicap ? ".I proceeded to reply that in the context of running it is a time penalty imposed on faster teams ...."No no" said Daniel "what's OUR handicap? " Doh
Thanks to all the CHA people who helped marshall , set up and pull down the course .
See you all next week at Pegasus for the Canty roads. Entries close Sun 31 July midnight.

July 26 th 2011-
Just had news from Dave Holland where he ran his first race on Australian soil in ChCh Avon colors . Dave has taken advantage of his wife and boys' holiday to the UK to train up for a race in the Glasshouse Mountains .He was 6th overall in a huge field over 25kms of trail running. Well done Dave - but two of the guys ahead of him were V50s !
Here's a snap of Dave 22 km into the course . I am trying to reduce the detail in this photo - you can almost see the bilbys in the gum trees behind him .( Not now , here's a smaller pic ).

On July 23 Halswell Quarry hosted the NZ Cross Country Champs .It was a chilly day but it didnt rain .The ground was not wet -even the water jump had almost dried up. CHCH Avon was a duty club and we'd like to thank all the people who responded to the call to help .
In the end we probably had a surplus and a few of you didnt get much to do. But there was some great racing to watch and some memorable sights of top runners in action. The course was slightly different to Canty Champs but deemed to be very close to the same distance.
Canterbury had some good results and CHCH Avon was part of that .The following runners stood out:
Sean Eustace B14 GOLD
Byron Heath B12 GOLD
Richard Seigne M45 SILVER
Robyn Perkins W45 SILVER
Lydia Marshall W19 Team GOLD
Laura Wood W19 Team GOLD
John Gamblin M50+ Team GOLD
We had about 7 vets in the first race , four were in Canterbury red singlets . Andy R/J and Rich Seigne ran together a lot of the way but Rich pulled away near the end to score 2nd fastest V45 in NZ. Andrew didnt medal in the tougher V40 age bracket .Anthony Rogal has had a hamstring niggle for weeks and in the heat of National competition it failed (in the first 100m ) Ant wisely pulled out . John Gamblin maintained his reputation for performing at big events .He was ahead of T.McManus for much of the 8kms and narrowly lost the sprint in to him .John 'golded' in the VM50 teams division. Denis showed how rapidly he can increase his speed and endurance in two weeks by beating Iain and almost Rodger too . Phil Costley was a runaway winner of the race .
The Vet Womens race was devoid of Jane Pairman due to a twisted ankle , but Robyn Perkins turned in a top run to get a silver medal VW 45 .She emphasised that she ran 2 mins quicker than at Canty Champs (how ???). Juliet also finished this race .The winners (from Wellington ) were amazing to watch .Gab O'Rourke had an almost robotic leg action which never altered whatever ground she was crossing . When finished she told us she was entered for the SWomens 8 km in the afternoon .She was in the top five there too .
The Senior Mens and Womens races had no CHA runners . The Mens field was large and high quality .It is really another world of racing with these guys in their twenties . The power and speed were impressive . But six laps of it certainly took the tar out of them . Local Matt Smith led the whole way to win 12 kms in 37 m 45 approx .
Sean Eustace and Byron Heath's golds will live with them for a long time.Byron looked like a young James Glasson as he crossed the line.
Laura and Lydia will be happy with their team Gold medals - just reward for all the hard training .Elise was unlucky to miss a prize .
Matt Dryden placed well in a very tough age group and trimmed 50 secs off last time. .

We have had the John Connor 4 km race and Canterbury Cross Country Champs . Short summaries of these are below .
First , a few miscellaneous bits .
1- Here's a short piece on how Selena Metherell is doing in her Orienteering in Eastern Europe. Selena's Mum writes : "Internet has been fairly shaky, however we were able to follow her races at Gdansk,Poland in the Junior World Champs, as the competitors ran through 2 radio controls and there were helpful spectators holding "chat sessions" at the events. She finished about 2/3s of the way through the field of 130 women, running on fast open forest terrain.
She held her place in the kiwi team easily. The european women dominated again although New Zealand gave them a shock when Angela Simpson lead the field in the sprint for a time, then finally finished 6th. This is the highest NZ has ever managed. Selena has 2 more years to equal it!! She is now running in the Croatian National Champs and after a poor 1st day came 4th and top kiwi in the Womens 18 yesterday. Next it is on the events in Slovenia, with a fair amount of travel and exploring en route.
An amazing experience and supported just this week by a grant from the Christchurch City council Fendalton Waimairi Youth development fund! With daily racing and the coach still traveling with them I think she'll be on target for NRR
Cheers
Michelle
2- In overseas events Margot Gibson just missed getting into the final of her 1500m in Lille France . She ran a couple of 4.34 s , which is very close to her best . Nick Merrett ran in the Gold Coast Half Marathon earlier this month and did 1.17.12 .He said he was a bit slow compared with his 1.15 the year before .But judging from the minimalist training Nick does it was a good effort . There was a great photo of a smiling Richie Merrett in a mid week newspaper .Rich was running the CHCH Marathon followed by two yellow helium balloons and a crowd of 1 hour 40 hopefuls. 3-John Connor Memorial Short Course 4 km (July 2 -2011) University Club kindly invited us to their annual short course race. The event was held on Burnside Park this year because the University Oval was being used for emergency buildings after the earthquakes . A testing and scenic little lap was set out in the eastern corner of the park .I say ' little' because two circuits certainly wasn't 4 kms - some estimates put it as low as 3.3 km .But there were two mini ravines and one hurdle per lap to make up for this . The hurdle was kindly made by Uni's Mike Bond .It was rather narrow and had ornately carved struts .It got limited use though because whenever a group of more than two runners drew near , marshals whipped it to one side to prevent pileups. Single runners had to leap it . There were a lot of CHA juniors and perhaps 14 seniors . Uni runners also turned up in good numbers .90 runners in all (60 kids) .The sun was out, but a thin July wind was on duty . Craig M did the handicapping and allowed some suggested adjustments from us (even Jane agreed that 30 secs on Iain was indefensible). Unnoticed, there were a couple of CHA dads who got dream handicaps and won the event by miles. There was a good gap between them and another gap to the rest of the field . Paul Norton and Denis Christmas chose the event to get back into racing . Denis hadn't raced for almost a year and Paul only manages one race annually (usually Hagley 5km) .Glad to say Paul finished uninjured .Graded results are available but I haven't worked out how to link to them....watch this space. 7- CanterburyCross Country Champs -Halswell Quarry July 9 th 2011. Canterbury was in a temperature bubble through mid July so we had a pleasantly mild day for this event.Just a light Nor East breeze all day .Races started mid morning and the final race (combined Mens ) went at 2.40 pm .The ground was not sloshy anywhere -apart from the water jump . A few random observations from the races: B14 Sean Eustace won again and drew admiration from CHAV vets watching .He is running like a professional at the moment.Matt Prest and Jacob R/J not far behind him and both getting better all the time too. Laura Wood went out fast in the W19 6 km event - full of triathlon confidence.Lydia and Elise looked a bit concerned , but but after 4 km they reeled her in . They finished 3 ,4 and 5 in a good field .Lydia just pipped good veteran K.Muller but ran some corners wide . Jane Pairman ran in the same 6 km race for 2nd VW 45.Robyn P was a little 'under the weather ' she said , and her race backed her up on that (2 minutes behind Jane instead of the one she should have : ) Anne won her age grade . The M16s also ran 6 km and Matt Dryden made a strong bid for outright victory against well- performed Ben Musson . Matt almost did it , but ran out of herbs in the final km. Look at his time though for 6 km -21.59 ! Dan Coats and Tannock Blair were in the top four about a min behind Matt. I think Dan won his age grade. Nick Merrett also went with the leaders in his M19 8000m run. He looked superb after a lap , but , as he himself predicted , lack of fitness cut in after that.He eventually got caught by the top Senior Women ! but look at his time -30.15 .Do three runs a week Nick and you'll be right up there. Alex Manton ran a solid 33 mins and looked to be free- flowing in places . The final race was the combined Mens races -Vets and Seniors of all ages . Perrin was our only Senior in the gruelling 12 km event . Its tough competing with the best runners in the province , but he finished about half way in the field. Richard Seigne got first M45 . Iain had to settle for 3 rd M60. Andrew R/J got fourth M40 . Anthony won the M 50 grade . Paul Norton buoyed by his good run at John Connor , got too ambitious and pulled a hammy at 4 km . He was leading Rodger and James at the time . Denis also withdrew somewhere before the end of the race but said he was progressing well in his come back. Cross Champs 2011 |
