" You are probably aware by now that Athletics New Zealand has a new website. As a result this has caused some issues with the Athletics Canterbury website. We would ask that you
be patient while we try and sort through them. Craig Brown and Daniel Reese are working hard on fixing these issues.

Club Closing day and Prizegiving is Sept 28 th (not far away now ) .This will be held at Russley Primary school (same place as 2012 ) .
" NEXT SATURDAY - 28 SEPTEMBER - FINAL RUN & PRIZE GIVING - RUSSLEY SCHOOL, 75 CUTTS ROAD
"We have CHOCOLATE, we have CERTIFICATES, we have TROPHIES – we need YOU!!!
When: Meet at 1:45pm for Golden km Relay team selection
Race Start: 2:30pm
Afternoon Tea: 3:00pm
Prize Giving: 3:30pm
Please bring a plate of something nice to share for afternoon tea.
Golden km Relay teams will be “scientifically” selected from all available runners present on the day (everyone welcome). The first team member (usually your fastest/fittest runner) runs a lap of the 1km course. Then the second team member joins them and they run the second lap together. Each lap one more team member joins the team until all team members run the last lap together. Depending on numbers there is likely to be 4 or 5 laps in total. The winning team, and winners of the CHAV Crown Jewels, is the first team that finishes with all team members crossing the finish line together."

Greta Valley Relay -September 21 2013 .This report follows a 'Rosetta stone ' format where three different accounts of the same event are offered .
Here is a description of the day from the Race Organiser ,Mike Riley.
"Another good day for a relay in the country, minimal wind with low cloud and some showers to settle the dust. Almost perfect for racing.
Entries continue to be at a consistent level being supported mainly by three clubs and social teams. Four of these teams were junior and it highlights that the distance is perfect for this age with challenging laps for all. We appreciate this continued support.
There were ten individual lap records and two race records created.
Records were created by Charlotte Blair, Mark O'Riley, Angela Whyte, Dave Macdonald, Goiteom Gebremedihim, Abby Williamson, Ben Musson, Cameron Avery, Chris Dryden and Harriett Bush,
The CHA Junior No 2 team of Charlotte Blair, Latham Fairhall, Rainer Pye, Sean Eustcae, Cameron Avery and Harriet Bush broke the Junior record in an overall time of 2.41.22.
The PTH Open Men's team created a new open record of 2.37.35. The team consisted of Mark O'Riley, Dave King, Aaron Richardson, Ben Musson, Alex Cowden and Brett Smith.
We'll see you all next year." (Mike Riley )
---------------------------------------------------------------------------Here's my account :
Ch- Ch Avon sent three teams - two J/ Mens and one Vet Mens .All of our teams had at least one female runner.
The conditions were calm and warmish with little wind - EXCEPT - on lap 3 and part of lap 4 . Some light rain also fell on those laps , probably because they were closest to the coastal weather . The Vets team took off 15 minutes before the two Junior teams , so the speculation was on how soon we would be caught .As events played out it was little later than expected .
Anthony takes over from John .
John Palmer hadn't raced for a couple of years but looked fit as he led us out on the short Lap 1 .Though only 4.6 kms it's quite challenging and John did well to get 19.21 . Anthony took over on Lap 2 and despite an obvious foot problem from Gov's Bay the week before , managed to gain time on three teams to get a respectable 31.25 .
Anthony on the ' hill ' of Lap 2 .
Robyn set out on Lap 3 looking very good but a breeze came up which put away any hopes of getting close to VW lap record .She did however , go faster than a senior woman who broke the SW lap record .Only two possible conclusions can be drawn from this ...(I'm a bit tired to work out what they are )
Robyn clicks her watch at start of Lap 3.
I was on lap 4 ' taking one for the team' ,as I explained in the car , to unanimous approval .Lap 4 is definitely the hardest and longest lap .I plugged along and was about 800 m from the end when Sean Eustace (CHA) and Ben Musson went past at speed . Ben won the sprint but his next runner wasn't there ... few things can be more exasperating for a runner who has slogged his heart out .
Anyway, my runner ,Iain, was waiting for me and took off on the rolling hills of Lap 5 .Iain moved tidily along the alternating gravel and tarmac sections while we took photos , chatted to a friendly farmer , and helped a bike puncture victim .Iain finished in good form to hand on to Gary for the glory lap .There wasn't a lot of glory to be had because the handicapping let all the earlier teams too far ahead (my team estimate was also a bit optimistic ) .But Gary did get to pass a couple of older chaps on one of the hills .
Iain at end of Lap 5 hands on to Gary .
In the Tavern all the stories were told of the mix -up on Lap 3 where three teams took a wrong turn up Happy Valley road .They were far from Happy . Angus Bailey of our CHA 1 Junior team lost 5 minutes , which almost certainly compromised the team's hopes of winning the relay and setting a new Open course record .Our CHA Junior 2 team was still good enough to set a new Junior Mens record .
Gary brings the team home on lap 6.
Despite the disappointments there were the following highs :
1- Charlotte Blair and Natalie Dryden both broke the Junior Womens Lap 1 record , but Charlotte broke it by more .They both had superb runs and can be very happy with their form .
2- Cameron Avery broke the Junior Mens Lap 5 record .His time of 29.57 compares to Paul Robinson's 28.14 and James Glasson's 27.38 (which are respectively the previous and present Sen Mens lap records -both CHA runners ). Incidentally , Matt Prest (JM) did 28.11 on this lap as well .
3- Harriet Bush broke the Jun Womens lap 6 record .
4 - Chris Dryden broke the Junior Mens lap 6 record (both Chris and Harriet have another five years as Juniors !)

Here is Craig's eye-witness description :
GREAT VALLEY JUNIOR RELAY TEAMS RACE REPORT
"Two Junior (Under 20) and one Masters CHAV teams travelled north to Greta Valley on Saturday morning to take on a very challenging (hilly) marathon distance relay. The two 6-person junior teams were selected for close racing. It turned out to be VERY close, but not quite in the way that anyone was expecting. Charlotte Blair and Natalie Dryden got the teams off to a fast start. Both girls bettering the junior women's first lap record with Charlotte getting her name in the record books by a mere 12sec over Natalie. Team orders were reversed on the next lap with Jacob Reese-Jones catching Latham Fairhall and opening up a small gap heading into lap 3. Angus Bailey took over from Jacob and was flying along early in his lap. Unfortunately, disaster struck with 3 teams missing a turn and straying off course midway through the lap. By the time they got turned around the positions of the leading 4 teams had been reversed. As a result Rainer Pye managed to bring his team in ahead of Angus. Over the next two laps Sean Eustace and Cameron Avery were able to extend the lead for their team by a few seconds each over Matt Dryden and Matt Prest respectively. Harriet Bush was another lap record breaker on the final lap, but it wasn't enough to hold out the hard charging Christopher Dryden who also ran to a lap record to catch Harriet with about 1km left to run and bring his team home for the win in the junior grade.
After over 2.5 hours of racing the teams were separated by a mere 43sec to claim the top two junior team places (2nd and 3rd overall).
In spite of the off course misadventure the winning team of Natalie Dryden, Jacob Reese-Jones, Angus Bailey, Matt Dryden, Matt Prest and Chris Dryden bettered the junior course record by nearly 13min. Which just goes to show why we never give up!
New lap records went to Charlotte Blair, Cameron Avery, Harriet Bush and Chris Dryden. Natalie Dryden, Sean Eustace and Matt Prest also ran faster than the existing lap records only to have their times beaten on the day (by seconds only)."

The old Boulder Bay Classic is being revived (although not quite as you remember it )
"Hi All
As you would have seen from the winter programme, the Sumner Running Club has introduced a new run (based on an old one) to the race calendar. The Skins Boulder Bay Classic is an stunning 10km run out at Godley Head which we hope you will all participate in on the 3rd November this year.
The run is principally sponsored by Skins but includes a number of sponsors so the prizes are awesome – Skins gear for all the male performance prizes; Skirts Sports gear for all the female performance prizes AND some amazing spot prizes including a Sunto watch valued at just on $600. In all the prize pool is in excess of $3,000.
Entries are limited to 300 so we have decided to release the web details to registered runners before we launch it on the wider Skins network. This wider launch will be on Tuesday SO we would appreciate it if you please circulate this email and the website details to your athletes this weekend so they don’t miss out.
Full details can be found at: (there have been some problems with this link- hopefully it is getting fixed )
Cheers "

Here is a message from Laura :
" My sister Emily and I are running in the Auckland Half Marathon in November this year to raise money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation in honour of our Grandmother. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer earlier this year but thanks to early detection and successful surgery, she has made a great recovery.
The link to make a contribution is http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/LauraandEmilyWood/ , and we would love fellow Christchurch Avon members to consider making a donation.
Many thanks,

Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge
18km Trail Run or 12km Trail Walk - Saturday 2nd November, 2013
Entries for the Shoe Clinic Bell Hill Challenge are now open.
The Bell Hill Challenge is an exciting new off-road concept for the Canterbury sports scene.
Enter now at: www.avalanchepeak.co.nz/default.asp?PageID=23279
Situated at Belldoon Farm in the Selwyn Plantation Block, approx 60k west of Christchurch , this 18k run or 12k walk takes participants on a scenic tour of the regions most historic but hidden landmarks....
Bell Hill, found just a few kilometers from Sheffield, was a major landmark used by early settlers as they traveled inland from Christchurch into the foothills and mountains behind Christchurch . At 960m high, Bell Hill summit can be seen from every angle in the surrounding region and once on top the view stretches for more than 30 kilometers in all directions.
The 18k Run and 12k Walk heads up to Bell Hill summit, before continuing on a loop on tussock ridges and forestry tracks above the Selwyn River back blocks. The course is steep in places, taking in tussock farm lands, 4WD drive and single tracks. This course is wonderfully remote but eminently achievable, and is otherwise closed to the public. So it’s a great chance for runners and walkers of all ability to experience one of Canterbury ’s hidden gems.
The Bell Hill Challenge is a great way to kick start your summer. It's also great training for other events like Kepler Challenge, Coast to Coast and the Avalanche Peak Challenge, which is also now open for entries...
For more information and to enter Bell Hill Challenge and Avalanche Peak Challenge visit www.avalanchepeak.co.nz
Organised by Avalanche Peak Challenge Inc.

CHUCKA'S RUN :
Sunday November 3
" Chucka's Run is an run that I arrange each year to give people training for the Kepler a chance to do a good long run one month out and is also good for those that like a good run offroad which this is. There are two distances the first which is 28km and the second which is 35km. I organise a bus which will leave from Hansen Park at 8am and head out to our starting point which is the Hilltop Tavern, we make one stop at Little River on the way. The run starts by going aling the Summit Road for about 400m before we turn left into a track which takes us above the bush line where we will regroup and head off on our journey across the tops and we will split into packs at the first style.
Both courses go the same way along the tops and up to the top of Mount Herbert and from here they go different ways the 28km goes down to Diamond Harbour where the bus will be waiting and the 35km goes past the Mount Herbert Shelter and from around Mount Bradley using the back track which should be cleared of gorse so they tell me to the Packhorse Hut and from there to Gebbies Pass and down the road for a couple of kms to the finish at Teddingten Tavern where the bus will end up.
You need to carry some gear in case the weather changes and the cost is only $25.
If you want to come along for a great day I can be contacted by e-mail chucka@clear.net.nz or 9808395 or 0273587153."
