Lionel Fox relay report : by Mike V
Remember that Rodger is leading Club runs at 5 .45 pm on Wednesday evenings from the Harewood Tavern Clocktower .
Lionel Fox relay report : by Mike V
(Sat 20 April 2013 )
An unpleasant misty wet day but a good turn out of 188 Senior runners and probably more than 200 in the Junior relay .
Sen Mens 1 team - these guys won the relay !
Sen Womens 1 team - these girls almost won the relay (close 2nd ) !
Sen Mens 2 team - these guys missed 2nd place by 11 seconds !
Vet Mens 1 team - considerably under strength, but got a close 4 th place
Sen Mens 3 team - 7th place .
Vet Mens 2 team - finished
Sen Mens 4 team - finished
The weatherman predicted a wet miserable day .There weren't any big downpours during the relay and it wasn't icey cold, but it wasn't enjoyable .CHCH Avon had seven adult teams comprising 28 runners, and it's to their credit they all turned up and ran well . Each year the pool of runners changes . A few from last year haven't registered yet and some probably wont .A few are overseas or studying in other new Zealand cities ; some are having a rest and others are injured .Nevertheless , we had fairly successful day .
Presently the club has about twelve junior male runners well under 18 years of age who all competed in Senior Mens teams and took out first , third and seventh places in the main relay .This is a golden period for the club. The SM 2 team placed third by 11 seconds ; but looking at lap times we could have selected the teams such that they could have taken 2nd place without depleting the SM1 team too much .
Our Senior Womens 1 team was by no means our strongest possible lineup, but they held first place right up to the last 800 m when Uni's Angie Smit pipped them by 20 seconds .Margot and Jessica were well up in the fastest lap times (Margot 3rd SW)
Our Vet Mens 1 team wasn't at full strength , but managed to get a close 4th place .They could have got third if Greg B had been in the team - he ran quicker than John G and Craig E but was a late entry.
Highlights :
Seeing Matt Dryden and Nick Findlay looking like tall twins in bright new singlets leading after the first circuit .
Following the crowd walking to the clearing to see if Richard Bennett had caught Jacob Reese-Jones in the forest ! Richard did and pushed our SM2 team into 3rd place .
Not a highlight to see Robyn run an absolute blinder for our Sen Womens last lap only to be run down by Uni in the final 600 m .

We are currently working on re-instating Sunday morning runs .
"Starting from Sunday 28th April all adult members and parents of runners are invited to join our club runs. These will leave the Sign of the TAKAHE at 8:30am. The aim is to run with like -minded people for about 90 minutes. We anticipate a couple of groups so there will be a pace which suits you! We will adjourn to Zeroes Cafe (bottom of Hackthorne Road) from 10:15am. Non-runners and cyclists can join us there for social interaction. "

Well done to the lads for winning the Hagley Relay. Great result!
ReplyDeleteYeah. It was a great sight Dave. First time for Christchurch Avon on the 25th running by the club in the event (less any Garden City occassions).Last time for the Christchurch club was back in the 1960's.
DeleteAlthough as we know performances and depth has dropped off. Only 3 running under 13.0 minutes this year in perfect conditions. The boys are really talented and some are better than some of the juniors in the past like Greg Nichols, Ryan McInnes and Sam Wreford at their age.
