News from the recent Cross Country and Road AGM where a remit was discussed proposing radical changes to the structure of the Club of the Year Award (COTY ) .Delegates from Sumner Club suggested that separate competitions for adults and children would address perceived imperfections in the present set-up. Several delegates from other clubs replied (including from CHCH Avon ) .
1- thought that splitting the competition would collapse the whole thing .
2- agreed that some tweaking could be done to the grade weightings .]
3- It was noted that some minor changes had already been into'd to COTY ie two extra qualifying events were added and 0/60 grade was added to points contribution .
4- noted that just because CHAV had been dominant in the first three years of the award that needn't be seen as a permanent feature because "clubs come and go "re dominance .
5- a separate Children's comp could descend into a burn-out scenario for the very athletes coming through to senior ranks.
The remit was defeated convincingly .

Thanks to all the people who answered the call to help out at Rawhiti on Saturday afternoon (Nov 10 ) .We had a bumper turn-up of volunteers all of whom were keen and competent .We had an enjoyable afternoon in the overcast warm conditions .Alot of good racing to watch and plenty of chances to sit and talk between events . The track is still a bit lumpy and it was hard to get nice linear matchups between hurdles .We were all finished by 5.20 pm .This was probably due to the better logistics of the ground compared to the old QE2 site . Getting hurdle trolleys and topper pads into the shed was a lot easier than the old 'catacomb ' arrangement under the QE 2 spectator stands. So thanks to Sue Williams , Therese Dryden, Gary Prest ,Andrew Reese/Jones , Craig Eustace , Roger Avery, Iain , James and Mr Jingles .

Sunday morning (Nov 11 ) there was perfect weather for the Canterbury Half Marathon Champs out at Tai Tapu .An 8 am start ensured the wind was fairly mild for most of the event and 'van Gogh ' cloud cover kept temperatures down. The course itself isn't fast due to rolling terrain and a long stretch of gravel .Two laps of this kept PBs down to a minimum, and neither performance incentive (M/F) prize was claimed .
Nine days missed training at the vital time meant that I was in no shape to run 21 kms .Gastroenteritis has a mind of it's own in this regard - no need to repeat the runs jokes . But I'd paid to do the Half so I biked out to have a go. I didn't wear a club singlet in expectation of failure to finish. Rodger and Robyn were already predicting a DNF for me based on their own algorithm and cornered me to stump up for beers if they were right .They were .I was shot after one lap and decided to turn into the finish after doing only 10.88 kms . I was well ahead of Robyn at this point. Rodger had a small setback of his own in that he tripped somewhere on lap 2 (on asphalt ) and got a bit of road rash .This slowed him down enough to let Robyn get within 3 minutes at the end .
There wasn't a high turnout of runners - perhaps 110 total? This race seems to follow a biennial cycle - next year will probably be better.  Anthony Duncraft was the leading runner in 1.19 approx with Fiona Gilroy leading the Women's race in 1.27 . Rodger  got 2nd placed  55 -65  year old in 1.38.15 . Robyn got 1.41.16 (2nd placed Vet Woman 45-49)  . John Hinton race walked one lap in 1.27.40
