First though, a short report from Paul N (?) on how the Junior teams went at NRR in Nelson. I think our top team was 10 th last year . Hope they made another video .
"Hi guys
Had a text through to confirm that our very young Junior A team (average age 15-16) have come 5th in the NZ Road Relay Championships in Nelson today and our B team was 10th. The A team were only 40 seconds from 4th and about 2 and a 1/2 mins. from third – very impressive for a team in the grade where runners can be up to 19 years of age! Well done to both teams…bring on the NZ Champs in Akaroa next year….can we make the podium? "
Also of note - Dave Catherwood and Zach Butler were in the winning Senior Mens B grade team .

Sat 29 th saw the final event of the winter season - our club Prizegiving. Once again we managed to secure the school hall on Cutts Rd thanks to Andrew and Rae .There were plenty of runners available for the golden mile relay and this was contested quite strongly . A team featuring Matt D and Paul Norton had the early lead but some tiny tots joined them and they ended up dead last .There was a good assortment of food brought along and the orange drink went very quickly.
Craig did the announcing for the Junior awards and this took longer than the Seniors due to the wide range of age categories and the greater number of cups and certificates and general awards.
But the Senior section had plenty of interest with all the club champions recognized ; Akaroa teams got their cups and batons, the COTY trophy was presented to the whole club and several people assisted or stepped up to have their say. It was great to have club Patron Ian Brownie there to hand out cups. Ian looked happy to have been called upon and gave a short reminiscence of Canterbury running in his younger years. Ian also got an Akaroa team baton for his run over Gebbies Pass last Saturday. Another celebrity presenter was Margot Gibson who stayed on stage after collecting her SWomens XC award to present cups to the juniors .Vic and Sandie also came up to announce the COTY result in their capacity as points calculators for the year. John Gamblin held the Costley Spike aloft and told us that it had been strongly contested with Sumner and University making strong bids to wrest it from us this year .Andrew Reese -Jones explained the difficulty he had in awarding his team's baton with several members having run outstandingly (including himself it should be added) .Craig's run on Lap 7 where he "shed blood " for the team was noted , but the nod went to John Gamblin for his strong run on Lap 4 (1st V50 and 9th overall) .Dave Tyrrell got a nice surprise to receive the VM team baton for his gutsy run on Lap 1 .Dave also got the Ray Davies trophy for best handicap run at Govs Bay 10 km .Robyn Perkins' strong year was recognized with the most improved runner award .Robyn lowered her marathon PB at least twice; ran a 1.05 in the Tai Tap 15 km; lowered her 10 km PB to 44.30 at Akaroa and ran a classy long off roader at the "Forest of Tane " event .
Surprisingly, neither wooden spoon was merited this year .It is hard to believe there were no bloopers made by anyone .
Womens Cross Country Champ- Margot G

Bev Prest Cup for Junior displaying all-round qualities during year -Natalie D
Mt Cook Rosebowl -Craig Eustace for yet another year of contribution to the Junior Club .
'Most Improved Runner 'trophy -Robyn P
Andrew Reese /Jones needed a carrybag to haul his cups away ; the Drydens needed a skip (even
Chris got his hands on the Golden Mile mug .)
During his talk Craig related how Barry Magee (1964 Olympic medalist) often stressed the three secrets to successful running : in order they are -
1- TRAINING
2 - Training
3 - Training
Rodger put in a good year as Club Captain and encouraged everyone to run again next year and to bring friends into the sport . His hosted Wednesday night club run gained a small but stable following over the year
This could be the place to acknowledge one other person in the club whose position precludes him from getting any recognition .This person has occupied his role for about ten years providing competent leadership and behind the scenes club guidance .I am talking about the President , John Ingles .We are very lucky to have him and I'm sure all the Exec members would voice their appreciation of his steady and able oversight of Christchurch Avon .

The COTY calcs for Akaroa are out and we didn't figure in the placings at all. This seems odd after our three grade wins and one second place .But the absolute times of all teams was the main consideration and grade wins wasn't .So we didn't place in the top three clubs ; but our work over the whole year was enough to ensure the trophy was ours.

Here is a piece of brazen self promotion from a Port Hills Club member (Peter Bayliss ) who has
issued an invite to long distance runners .Pete is a good mate so we are happy to print his message
" Sunday 28 Oct . Chucka's Run is an event that I organise for people that are training for the Kepler or other long off road events or for those that like a good day out on the tracks. I run from the Hilltop Tavern and go along the top tracks up to the top of Mount Herbert and have two directions from here. The short course goes down to Diamond Harbour which is about 28km and the bus will be waiting to take you to Teddington Tavern. The long course goes around the back of Mount Bradley and then along to the Packhorse Hut where you follow the good track down to Gebbies Pass and down the road to Teddinton Tavern and this is about 35km.
At this point we have a drink and something to eat before heading back. We meet at Hansen Park for a departure time of 0800 and an arrival time of 1700 and we make one stop at Little River on the way out At this point we have a drink and something to eat before heading back.
